MM Lee: I am exception to the rule
In Quotes • 1,297 views • 70 Comments
We also have a rule, I’m the exception to the rule, I’m 86… But I’m not doing the work; I’m just forecasting… The work is being done by younger people in their late 40s and 50s.
MM Lee Kuan Yew, on why younger politicians create better results for the country

OMG, can have the cheek to say that he is not doing the work but others are doing his job. Then why is he paying himself millions! Shame on those who had voted those cheats in the govt!

I find his words ” I’m the exception to the rule, I’m 8″ most interesting.
simply amazing.

erm, should be 86 instead of 8. the html misinterpreted.

in a few days, we would be going into te year 2010.
Everyone will be older based on calendar year.
Happy birthday lee in advance for your 87th birthday in 2010.
If the millions he is getting is distributed, MANY lives can be improved.

He is in the frontline but from the back which is more worse. Double stadard MM. Don’t said what is not right to said.

Guess modesty is the in thing for him. Or rather self praise is and international disgrace or in his case singaporean disgrace.
The gall and cheek of him to say he is the exception to the rule. Whta perhaps he is trying to say is singapore cannot survive without him. He has to be around. Perhaps he is looking for new organs to rplace all in his body so that he can live longer.
Hmm, thats a good thought. One wonders why the organe transplant bill went through so fast. Maybe they had him in mind for a total organ transplant. Singapore is world famous for being the “First” in everything , perhaps we will be the first have a person who has had a total organ trnsplant for the entire body!

‘Mr Lee noted the economic and political system in Japan is still based on seniority. And he said leaders there could learn from China, which requires its political leaders to step down when they turn 65′.
What a classic comment Minister Mental! Always lecture other leaders but not himself!!! I think he (MM) should be the first to step down and save the millions he helped himself.
Hypocrite indeed! You ain’t no God MM. Pls relinquish your power and let the younger leader take over before its too late! How about considering Dr CSJ for the PM post? I’m absolutely positive that Dr Chee will do a much better job and Dr Chee will definitely be ‘Cheaper, Faster & Better’!

Looking at the comments, I’ve no doubt that the PAP will rule for a 1000 years, if CSJ is the best the opposition can muster. All you could offer were whining and cries of injustice. The last time a group of people did that, they were massacred at Tiananmen Square. Some moral victory, eh?
OriginalResonance
Assuming CSJ comes into power, how would he react to the financial malaise? Ask for help from Sweden? Pray to god? What would he do when faced with the threat of war? Report the transgressor to NATO for breach of human rights? After they’ve invaded us? LOL. Stop dreaming, people. Stick with what you have now. It’s the lesser of two evils.

Any alternative will only be an alternative to CSJ. If CSJ isn’t bad enough, I can’t fathom how pathetic the alternatives would be. You will probably get some middle aged towkay with a large support of coffee shop ah peks, shouting “we want freedom!! wo yao zi you!!” That’s the best the opposition can come up with, if you ask me. Some maverick with more guts than gumption and no coherent policies other than emotive slogans, reveling in his real-life adaptation of William Wallace.

Forgive my ignorance but what is stopping a strong opposition candidate from overthrowing the incumbent party? ”
You are extremely ignorant and naive indeed.
This single innocuous sentence immediately invalidates everything you aforementioned because you simply fail to realize both sides of the coin.
Sure MM has toiled hard for us but I believe its time to ‘move on’ (like what his son always tells us these days) and stop basking in the glory and successes of yesteryear. The Soviet Union had mindblowing foresight too. They once forecasted the Berlin Wall to last another 100years.
Its little things that people say like these, and MM’s ‘highfalutin’ speech and Dear Fredrick’s beloved diatribe of Singaporeans that brighten up my day.
If i could print out and paste all these quotes all over my house walls, I’ll have a brand new set of wallpaper all round my home.
Clear eyed
He believes he’s God, so of course none of the rules on earth applies to him. That’s also why he’s not ashamed to tell us that he does no work and yet is paid out-of-this world salary and perks.

“Why is CSJ still alive? Or is it because he does not fit into the definition of “strong”?”
What do you think that he should be ? Singapore is not a basket case and there are good enough number of people with eyes to see.

I only wanna know if there’s anything stopping legitimate, qualified opposition candidates from contesting in elections.
OriginalResonance
Nvm. I’ll elucidate my question for all of you. What will happen when a majority of the electorate votes for the opposition?
Just Another Singaporean
Allowing legitimate, qualified opposition candidates to contest in elections is only one part of the whole electioneering process.
The rest of the process is also important and this needs no further elaboration.
Ulimately, one still has to satisfy the definition of legitimacy and qualification and probably you should know who is actually defining it.
Utopia
“I’m just forecasting… The work is being done by younger people in their late 40s and 50s.”
The only thing that he forecast 100% accurate is that Dr Chee will land up in jail and never enter election again as long as he still alive, and those ensuring dirty work is being done by younger people in their late 40s and 50s who are the police, ISD and military bootlickers who benefit from Old fart’s favour.

@30
You provide the question, “Forgive my ignorance but what is stopping a strong opposition candidate from overthrowing the incumbent party? ”
and you followed up with “No answer?”
Since you know that there is no answer, why ask a rhetorical question. Knowledgeable persons like you have so much to offer and yet so little to provide.
Such a tease, you illicit the feelings of suspense and yet fail to deliver the answer.
But I think that, you know the answer. Even Fredric Fanthom knows the answer. It has to be the defamation suits! There is also the lingering ghostly aura of the feared int3rnal s3curity act.
“Any alternative would be better to CSJ”. This is an over generalization on your part. Now why is your yardstick of comparison to another alternative opposition is CSJ? I am tempted to post no answer to that question, but being inquisitive I shall give you the chance to answer.
And if you are not still in your well, step out into the common world. The consensus is not about wanting freedom, is about wanting a better life. You will not find coffeeshops filled with ah peks braying for freedom, instead you would find them grousing that life is hard etc.
“Assuming CSJ comes into power, how would he react to the financial malaise? Ask for help from Sweden? Pray to god? What would he do when faced with the threat of war? Report the transgressor to NATO for breach of human rights? After they’ve invaded us? LOL. Stop dreaming, people. Stick with what you have now. It’s the lesser of two evils.”
Likewise, to you, PAP is now in power, how can they resolve the financial malaise? What would PAP do when faced with threat of war? What would the PAP do in times of crisis? Stop dreaming OR. You can leave Singapore if you choose to, its the quitter mentality.

I am confused.
How in the world is going from “I only wanna know if there’s anything stopping legitimate, qualified opposition candidates from contesting in elections.” to “What will happen when a majority of the electorate votes for the opposition?” defined as elucidating?
It is neither more clear nor less ambiguous. In fact they are totally different questions.
I am confused as to if you actually know the meanings of the words you are typing.
What is stopping legitimate, qualified opposition leaders from contesting?
Need i point you to Operation Coldstore, the examples of Francis Seow, JBJ, Tan Liang Hong and this may not be too relevant to the case of the Opposition, but the case of Ong Teng Cheong, our only elected President who for some reason was not given a state funeral surely gives some inkling to how the PAP treats opponents. Even the much demonised CSJ’s treatment by the PAP i’m sure you would agree goes beyond any realm of decency.
“What will happen when a majority of the electorate votes for the opposition?”
Well then:
Finally we may get a government that stays less in their ivory tower looking down on us peasants.
Finally we may get a government that knows that they will have to account to the people and quotes like “People do want to know, there is curiosity, it is a matter of public interest. That is not sufficient reason to disclose information. It is not sufficient that there be curiosity and interest that you want to disclose information.” will not cut it.
Finally we may get a government that finds an alternative way to help the poor rather than increase GST.
Finally we may get a government that treats it’s citizens better other than just pay lip service.
Finally we may get a government that does not view a single person as an assembly.
There is so much more. You must not buy into the PAP’s threat that without them Singapore will go down the toilet. Without the PAP, all government bodies staffed with capable civil servants will still go on, private enterprise will still continue, Singaporeans will still work hard like our forefathers before.
A large part of Singapore’s success is down to the work of common Singaporeans. Not just down to the PAP.

MM loves to give advice to everyone before he dies, to US, China, Japan, Russia etc. He looks down on everyone. Maybe he should write a book of prophecies.
Our 3G army is not even tested. We depend of foreign companies, labor, food, water etc. He brags too much. He talks as if he has nuclear weapons capabilities. Can he build a satellite or launch a rocket to the moon or send a PAP general to space via US, China, Japan, Russia, Europe etc.
His men can’t even deal with flooding. I think he should pay more attention to ASEAN. Don’t be so proud mah. Make some friends with your neighbors.

After reading this quote somehow i get this vision of our revered MM sitting in a darkened room, on a brass tripod, the legs of which were angled at the same degree as the Egyptian pyramids.
A brass bowl filled with steaming water and pungent oils in front of him. He then empties his soul, brain and heart of all care and attains a state of tranquillity and stillness of mind.
In this trance suddenly he raves – probably in a form of ecstatic speech – and then his ravings are “translated” by the by younger people in their late 40s and 50s into elegant hexameters, or since English is our official language – iambic pentameter rather.
From this, government policy is shaped.
Our MM truly is this century’s or in fact any century’s foremost seer and prophet.

ohnani, i fear you have been indoctrinated in the mythologies of the western world, albeit in the middle east they are still relatively west from us. Here with asian values, the only approach for forecasting is still rooted in the eastern methodology eg I-ching.
You are one for meddling in our tried and tested prediction method, assisted by western ideas. How shall the great one, who is the exception to the rule, deal out His punishment for you. Haven’t you realized that our city is an exception to the other westernized democracies! We are a united one party city state that will not be subjugated by these westernized societies who have the audacity to impose their own structure of beliefs so as to change us. Even though we are wrong, we are still an exception to the rule that there is a need to apologize.
Ohnani, the picture you have painted is apt, but the representation is quite rightly out of touch. To correct it, you would have to give it an asiatic touch so as to nullify the western leanings that you are showing.

There are at least 2 reasons stopping legitimate qualified opposition candidates from contesting in elections:

What is stopping a powerful opposition from rising up? Perhaps we should examine the context of our political landscape. Is it even possible for the opposition to become strong? Is what is seen on the surface (ie. through the much derided MSM) all there is to the story? A systemic approach would be suitable in examining this issue rather than an episodic case-by-case study such as CSJ is a madman and so there is no strong opposition.
I refer to the chain of democratic choice as written by Andreas Schedler in the Journal of Democracy, 2002:
The chain of democratic choice consists of seven factors that contribute to democracy. The chain is as strong as its weakest link ie. the validity of democracy is only as strong as its weakest factor.
The factors are:
1. Empowerment: Delegation of real decision-making power to
those who are elected.
2. Inclusion: Equal rights for all citizens to participate.
3. Insulation: Freedom to vote without intimidation.
4. Integrity: One person, one vote.
5. Irreversibility: The decisions of the electorate must be binding.
6. Free supply: Freedom of citizens to form, join and support
parties, candidates, policies.
7. Free demand: Voters must be able to know what their choices are so they can form their preferences. Parties and candidates must have free and fair access to the public space.
We are all smart keyboard warriors here on TOC, so I leave everyone to ponder whether Singapore’s chain is strong or weak, and which ‘link’ in the chain fails us, if any.
Cheers.

Yet another overly simplistic and generalized stereotype here. I am not saying that what we have here today is a given (and you can infer from here which generation i belong to), sure MM has brought and led us through magnificently but if you make comparisons between what the man says today compared to the political speeches and rallies he made in the past (and i didn’t read them from the mainstream newspapers but from academic records and research papers), the man has changed alot since his universitiy days of involvement in the Democratic Socialist Club and if you know about the history of PAP, their original party constitution was aligned more towards democratic socialism. Now when i look around myself today, i wonder, “what fracking democratic socialism are you talking about?” my healthcare subsidies are discriminated against what type of house i live in and the biggest joke is that even the parking charges for my car are given the same degree of bias. what type of government treats its citizens as stereotypically as ours?

Flash in the Pan
Flash in the pan. It is common knowledge who was the smart-alec Singapore political leader who said these infamous words in describing Mr. Barack Obama before he was elected American President. Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew appeared to be disdainful about the prospects of a black American candidate becoming an American President and true to his highfalutin character he irresistably opened his big mouth to make his disparaging portrayal of Mr. Barack Obama. Any possible repercussion arising out of his cavalier utterance could not have been further from his mind. He was apparently rooting for the white candidate Mr. John McCain and was no different from the white American supremacists who considered the election of a black American President to be apocalyptic.
As a result, the victory of Mr. Barack Obama in the American presidential election could not but bring mortification to MM Lee. That President Obama was subsequently awarded the Nobel Peace Prize within a year of taking office added to MM Lee’s consternation. This was not the first time he opened his big mouth which brought embarrassment to the point of disaster. But all is not lost because MM Lee has a thick-skinned quality and can change like a chameleon. He calculated that he had to come to terms with the untenable problem sooner or later. The opportunity presented itself when he went to America to receive an award presented by the US-Asean Business Council end of October. He managed to wrangle a meeting with President Barack Obama the day after the award dinner.
That President Obama was magnanimous enough to condescend to see MM Lee warts and all could not have escaped his narrow outlook of black people. He was naturally astounded and overwhelmed when President Obama described him as “one of the legendary figures of Asia”. President Obama was very liberal with his accolade to people who had been disparaging in their behaviour towards him. And MM Lee may be forgiven if he had been mesmerised by the thought that President Obama had been incredibly forgiving. This must have been so exhilarating to him that he forgot himself and made his gaffe by calling on President Obama to engage in Asia in order to counter-balance the emerging economic and military might of China. This immediately evoked a colossal uproar from the Chinese people, especially their netizens, which looked like it was going to be prolonged. But Chinese leaders very judiciously mitigated the situation, not necessarily out of any consideration for MM Lee but more likely for the overall political interests.
Can the leopard change its spots? Can MM Lee be counted on to curb his tendency of making political gaffes in future? We may see a subsidence of indiscretions on his part for a time but there is no guarantee that there will not be a recrudescence of his gaffes. This is a problem which deserves a final solution by the PAP leadership. After all, he is drawing a whopping salary for doing a nominal job.

In other words Japan is a democracy, China is leaning towards democratic practices while Singapore remails an autocratic and nepotistic dynasty.

Remember he forecast that Singapore was entering golden period, then the market crash and Singapore was caught in a recession. So much for his forecasting powess. And to be paid millions for dollars for this is obscene, isn’t it?
