Li Shengwu is the grandson of Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew. He has been ranked the top debater at the world’s biggest debating tournament, beating more than 700 others to be ranked number one. Mr Li, who turns 25 this year, is currently pursuing graduate study in economics at Oxford University. The motion of the debate was “The media should show the horrors of war” while Shengwu was on the proposition team.

Topic of the debate: Is Press control good for Singapore?
2 things.
A) there’s a reason shengwu’s staying in Britain instead of coming back to Singapore, and while that probably isn’t the same as changing his surname to Wong I think it says enough, yes?
B) In case you didn’t know, debaters don’t get to choose which side of the house they get. He’s debating for Oxford, and obviously he wants to win, and so does his teammate. So according to you, he should ignore the fact that his university is relying on him and his teammate is relying on him merely because he comes from a family which may or may not be tangential to whatever he needs to say. Well, that’s bullshit. Most people don’t believe in half of the crap they say to convince other people of certain things, and that’s when they do so with no reason. Clearly, he has a perfectly good reason to speak as such (winning) so I don’t see how anyone with half a brain can accuse him of speaking with a forked tongue. I mean, if a teacher asks you to read a comprehension passage in which it says “family is important” and you do so, it doesn’t mean you believe family is important. Of course, if you don’t believe it then you’re probably twisted (yes, wing ding, this is kind of insulting you) and disturbed, but the principle stays the same. Just because you say something under certain extenuating circumstances doesn’t mean you need to necessarily believe in it in real life. I’ve debated against the death penalty before, even though I think it’s something which should be used- obviously we shouldn’t let our own views get in the way of what needs to be done, especially since there aren’t exactly huge repercussions from saying that the media should show the full horrors of war during a debate.
So… try to grow a brain. Or at least half. Please?
