By Shawn Lim, Guest Writer

By now, most of us would have watched the videos in which Pastor Rony Tan of Lighthouse Evangelism, an independent church, made some nasty comments on Taoism and Buddhism. He was called up by the Internal Security  Department and was warned about his comments. Thereafter, he apologised to both the Taoist and Buddhist Federations.

My question is, should he have been let off with only a warning? Pastor Tan obviously knew what he said was wrong, which explains why he took the initiative to apologise. He also knew that this is Singapore, where different religions co-exist and there is racial harmony.

Therefore, why did he post the video knowing that what he said had, in his own words, ‘done a great deal of harm to the Buddhist and Taoists’?

As a Christian myself, I was taught to love my neighbours, which would include people of other faiths.

One only needs to look to our neighbouring country, Malaysia, to see what misunderstandings of religious practices can do to a country.

So I find it disturbing that the the ISD and various Government officials chose to adopt the stance of ’since he has apologised, let’s move on’.

I don’t know the main reason why the ISD chose to intervene when it had previously ignored the AWARE saga. Maybe it was because of the religious tension in Malaysia, or because of the public’s reaction.

What they should have done, instead of warning him, was to punish him. Fine him; send him to jail, whatever. If it takes a show of power to prevent this kind of incidence from happening again, by all means, do whatever that is necessary.

Strangely enough, Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng pointed out that not only the Buddhists and Taoist were offended, but this incident had “angered even Singaporeans”.

So why are the authorities so lenient when what Pastor Rony was clearly out of line with the first rule of religious harmony; which is to show respect for other religions? Do they not realise that a ‘warning’ in an increasingly vocal society is not enough?

Sometimes, an apology is simply not enough. In Pastor Tan’s case, he is an ‘opinion’ leader, which means he has more influence than the common man.

  1. DEAR ONLINE CITIZEN FRIENDS,

So far we have gone through here, please kindly advise me if it is illegal or inappropriate to chat, or having a dialgue, or hold discussion  or even debating if neccesary with matters concern that is happening recently as per Rev Pastor Rony Tan issue/case? I will be obliging to stop chatting completely if it is so!

    THANK YOU.

  2. are you seriously a thinking person?
first off, we respect the state position to govern and totally support it. however, we cautioned that all matters be handled not only with sensitivity but with honesty and transparency so as a whole, more can be part of decision making.
to take a box and packaged in Christmas wrappings so it looks presentable to the majority without them fully understanding the content of the box is not exactly, democratic
put it another way, who will receive the beautifully packaged box knowing that there is a bomb hidden in it? would you? would the majority be so foolish?
let’s not gloss over sensitive issues. if those in powers can convince us the material in the box is harmless, i am sure, the majority democratic leaning will be peaceful.
unfortunately, they do not want to be honest and open up the Pandora box, now do they?
whether you like it or not, but make no mistake about it, Christianity is on a WARPATH – towards Armageddon(don’t take our word for it. walk into a good book store or just google. the FACTS are all there). its misguided message of “love and good will towards men” are a means to an end – and the end is DEATH to those who oppose their “God”.

no one in his/her right mind will want to be part of this deadly religion unless you are a religious psychopath or living in neverland!!!

    My Dear Mr Oh,
Forgive me, but I must disagree with you that Rony should be locked up in prison just for the purpose of spreading his gospel. I think this is such an oversimplification of reality.
I would rather prefer for Rony to be fined and cautioned, as a deterence to the multitude of others, rather than jailed.
    Morover, contrary to your expectations, there is no guarantee that those imprisoned people will tolerate Rony’s preaching.}
    ————————————————————-
THE PROSPECT OF A CHANGI PRISON LIGHTHOUSE EVANGELISM BRANCH CHURCH REALLY EXCITES ME!

Thanks for responding to my post, Sir. You are right in what you said in your post. But Pastor Rony Tan can have the choice of not paying the fine and opting for prison sentence in default. This will then show clearly to netizens that he is not a coward and not afraid of prison; that he repeatedly apologises because he was/is sincerely sorry and remorseful for letting down many people; and that he wants to redeem the situation to set a good example for his church members and Singaporeans how we should be resolving problems we often encounter in our lives.

You are right also that many prisoners would not want to listen to his stories from their “chaplain-in-residence-cum-pop singer”. Well, Christ was not 100% successful too. Many did not take to Christ’s preaching also and the great miracles that He did. During His Passion, all His disciples ran away and even disowned Him.

The money-greedy Judas was perhaps Christ’s biggest failure and disappointment, who then hang himself and died. I feel so sad for Judas that he had to die in that way, when what he simply needed to do was to repent of his evil, ambition and greed, and trust in God’s great ability to forgive him and to cleanse him from all unrighteousness with the Blood of Jesus.

Isn’t it sad that here was a man Judas who had been with Jesus for so long; had slept with Him and ate with Him, yet he still wanted to betray Him to the Jewish High Priest for 30 pieces of silver?—big money in those days.

But many prisoners in Changi prison, including some hardcore ones and the prison warders, will love to listen to his captivating stories and inspiring singing. After all, Pastor Rony knew that it has been God favouring him and working through him, not his own innate ability to do miracles and to touch the hearts of murderous sinners like he once was.

And so we can then see Pastor Rony successfully establishing his branch church for Lighthouse Evangelism right in the heart of Singapore’s penal system. And that will be great!—-as there will be no need to spend so much money on church building, and working so hard to invite people, when there is a captive audience, to come to his very successful and very captivating and inspiring Saturday Night’s Miracle Services and other services.

Why is Pastor Rony Tan so successful since his conversion days from being a staunch anti-Christian Taoist-Buddhist? Because he has his own gripping stories to tell. Since then, he has been an emotionally well-adjusted and an honest, truthful, caring, good-hearted and humble man. This is the type of spiritual man that God would love to use to spread His great love and to hear his vicarious prayers, Sir!

That is why should Pastor Rony be brought to court, the judge will not be able to bring down a conviction on such a truthful, caring and patriotic man as the court will only look for issues and requirements of the law—for facts, truths and logical arguments. Courts are not interested in theological debates as they are not constituted to arbitrate for competing theologies.

If Pastor Rony opts to go to jail, imagine Pastor Rony’s church members telling people after his release from prison how happy they are that he has succeeded to establish a new branch church called Changi Prison Lighthouse Evangelism! That will be fantastic!

That is why for those anti-Pastor Rony Tan elements who are baying for his blood and wanting him to be jailed, I am fully supportive of their excellent idea to have him jailed. That being the case, why are they now not supporting me for being supportive of their own idea?

Jesus says, “The gates of hell will not prevail against the kingdom of God.” Matthew 16:18. How true it will again be!

    Cheers!

put down his name and church if you think he will fear GOD more than he fears man. and because he believed he speaks for god and god is in him and for him, he  will not deny christ, and his word, because he  feared for his life.

“please kindly advise me if it is illegal or inappropriate to chat, or having a dialgue, or hold discussion  or even debating if neccesary with matters concern that is happening recently as per Rev Pastor Rony Tan issue/case?”

It takes two to tango. while you are having your own viewpoint, there is this someone (or maybe more) who are going to receive your viewpoint and interpret it in a way he wants (out of his own experience & upbringing), sometimes in a very twisted or extremely negative extent.

The recipient of your original message may counter with his own viewpoint (which may be very provocative and unnecessary), inviting further tic-for-tac from the other side and this may spiral out of control where it reaches a point of no return (no control) – where supporters on both sides may be instinctively herded to take side on something of their deeper primal belief (e.g own race or religion) which they hold dear.

The scope of broadcasting your view must be fitting to the tolerance or sensitivity level of your recipients.  And it is prudent to err on the safe side as certain matters just have a greater volatile effect in their very nature.

Legality like anything else is a man made concept and it is cold comfort when comments are taken out of context, depending on where you stand, resulting in damage & injury (again men made by another different group(s) of people who may apply a different set of rules).

Common sense & wisdom still prevail over matters of heart which transcends the arbitrary line of straight jacket rules (law), still necessary in our ever friction-filled human civilization.

The ones that should go to the prison are those that continue to “fan the flames” and still persistent in stirring “hate discussions.” If all of us are sincere about peace and harmony, this discussion should end here. Do something better like contributing to nation building…. :)

  14. Dear *beprudentovercertainmatters* – Peace

Honestly those who keep on quoting their wonders/beauties of Beliefs/Religions in their Text books etc are the ones keep the fans on & on instead… without realising the concept of fundamental neutral/unbiased discussion. If all MPs in parlianment keep their personal beliefs/religions when debating I think Singapore will collapse & finish. See our neighbour we should learn a thing or two how family/familes memberbeing crully separated when races & religions are being misused or abused. We should approach with appropriate attitude scientifically otherwise why should study science in school & hence enjoy the its fruits of technology advance of products today.
If everyone keep using God(s), Jesus Christ, Buddha, Tao or Dao & quote this & that from the texts etc etc I think we are heading to no where in any discussion!!!

I believe inter-faith or inter-religious organisation (IRO) is the most appropriate solution/answer to bring us together in Singapore. Remember the President of IRO anouncement recently? As a IRO head as well as Buddhism leadership he merely used the word ‘Amituofo’ to accept the apology & ‘O-Lord’ among the National Prayer used at IRO meeting!

Here is Ven.Sik Kwang Sheng’s response as President of IRO:-

As the testimonies and how they were conducted were highly misrepresentative of the faiths mentioned, that they provoked much public outrage is understandable. However, now that there is commitment that such an incident will not happen again, we should let the matter rest. It is actually very comforting to know that most public online comments on the videos speak for the importance of guarding religious harmony. In this way, the videos became accidental tools for supporting this cause.’ –
    Amituofo,

    Do visit http://www.iro.org.sg/website/home.html

I know many preachers also learn David Copperfield tricks, otherwise how to convince the congregation, spirits descend spirits go, ha ha ha !

In a multi-racial society, it is very easy n an asset to learn other true religious teachings, too.

Anyway, no money -  no gifts -  no job offers -  no money no honey -

  17. aiyoh, how can someone who feed off spineless leaders can know the truth? let me helch you. in the temptation of jesus, the devil depicts the pseudo christ or pseudo god. what he did was offer leadership to jesus to be a pseudo god or be god at the top of the building. what does top means? precisely what it means. be on top, be high above the rest, be the commander, be the chief priest etc etc but where? the bible went on to say…the building is the temple or religious organization. and who is the oman, the chief, the head, the strongman in these buildings? now if jesus was to take on the job, he will defeat the kingdom of god because he will take on the image of the pseudo god or the devil. but what’s the bait here? the bait of being the chief priest is a strong …ahem, alliance  with the roman’s govt( the powers of the day). the deal is, when you are at the top, being the pseudo god with rome’s powers, you can violate the laws( throw yourself against the stone – stone is where the laws are carved) angels or messengers  servants to the pseudo god will save you or ensure double standard is practiced lah.
that’s why you see ppl(their angels) coming in here APPLYING LEGAL DOCTRINES from preventing the TOP DOGS of these organizations/buildings/temples being crushed by their hypocritical laws carved on STONE lah. and jesus warned, the true god can’t be tempted to sit on TOP of these temples lah. understand? lol

    Dear frens,

Always remember. All religion teaches us to be good and nice to all.

Why are we all doing this to each other. Let go back to basic and re-look into the matter.

Are we practising what we learn or preach?

Don’t get so worked up. Words are merely words. They are harmless on its own.

They become harmful when we (human) combine with other words or add feelings to it.

Just like water is harmless. It hydrate us. But when combined with other stuff or too much of it, it will drown us.

At the end of the day, we are all child of the universe. Regardless of age, gender, race, religion, nationality, etc.

    Wishing you well.

  24. Wondering 17 February 2010

SADLY, ONE RELIGION TALKING NEGATIVELY ABOUT ANOTHER RELIGION WILL BE WITH US FOR THE NEXT 1,000 YEARS AND MORE
    Dear Oh Tham Eng,
-You are quite intelligent person as I see it from my personal own-point of view & in fact I quite agree most of the points you had been written so far but I am very surprised you keep on quoting/clinging/attaching the same strong words/stories of your personal own belief/religion right in front us here when you chat/discuss/debate or whatever you are doing here so far! I am real disappointed indeed! I hope I am wrong about you! You have done a good job so far as a Christian as a matter of fact as per Rev Pastor Rony Tan case/issue!
-However, if you keep on standing on your stubborness of religion as a basis to talk here & if most Singaporeans who do not agree with you use the same method to counter react your points, I think you are pretty right to say that it may take another 1000 years or more to cool down & settle the dust… bearing in mind that apart from the Christianity & Islam – both had gone through thousands years of conflicts & wars because of the extremes ideologies/concepts even though they are of same belief of one creator or god!  Your standing ground is strangly inappropriate in my point of view.
-On the other hand if you stand on your own group of Christianity of same group with that kind of  strong authoritive/powerful belief to chat/discuss/debate, you are 100% appropriate or correct to my humble & shallow level of understanding as a third person because strictly I am not bind with any religion though officially I am stated as a Buddhist in my identity card.
    - peace

  27. Oh, what a sermon!

Mr Oh, you have such a mouthful of biblical quotes.. ever since you rose to prominence in the aftermath of the Rot-ny Tan incident.

You must be very proud of your achievement for “Without my success with the police and their compassion, the whole matter would still be roiling.”  The netizens are actually in serious discussion to nominate you as the Most Promising Up-and-Coming Pastor Award in order for you to take over the role of the infamous pastor when he decides to step down from Lighthouse, i.e. if he ever is willing to step down.

I really respect your guts to spout the unlimited amount of biblical verses, I even thought you are a real pastor with your vast knowledge of the bible, YOUR holy book. Perhaps you are just flipping through the different books of the bible in order for you to find a verse as appropriate as to educate us, the ultimate sinners.

You also seem to be very blessed with YOUR god’s love because you are constantly enjoying YOUR god’s help. Very much the same if I say you are ever-inspired by your god the lord.

It will take up enormous space if I continue singing praise about you and your enlightening religious teachings as well as your quotation from YOUR bible. And for reason of space constraint I just cant go on highlighting your good deeds here, and I believe in the grace of your god, you will forgive me for not praising you enough.

The truth of the matter is, you are such a hypocrite, blabbering a loadful of holy words to pursue your fame, or should I say infamy. Does this forum look like a church to you? Do you feel that this is a place for religious fellowship? Or are you fantasising that you are the self-proclaimed self-righteous self-know-it-all religious teacher/preacher/evangelist/pastor-to-be/etc to all of us here, hoping that we will all be saved by your honourable intention to “deliver us from evil”.

Please, Mr Oh, for the sake of your god, please please please stop your sermon here. And halt all your quotations, these are aplenty in the bible. If you feel the police and ISD and WKS and whoever you had contacted had done a great job for not pursuing further on Rot-ny Tan’s case, so be it. Just leave at that and don’t brag about it here to earn credit for only your same kind will give you the credit.

Will you practise your commandment to love thy neighbour, please love us, your cyber neighbours, and put a halt to irk us further. I must qualify, it feel terrible to have said all that I have put in this message because we are fellow human beings, and are supposed to practise tolerance to each other. I am also a human being, and I have plenty of weaknesses, one of which now is that I am extremely extremely irked by what you have posted so far, especially when you signed off each message with an exclaimation that your god is great. Your point is taken, you can stop wielding that keris in the air henceforth.

This message is intended to let you know what many felt about your hypocrisy, I have no intention to debate with you on your action and will not reply to any of your future nonsensical sermon.

  28. shameonyou 17 February 2010

oh,my my my, are our laws designed to protect spineless hypocrites??  i think the message to the people(and the world)  is very clear. we welcome and are led by spineless and gutless hypocritical leaders whose saliva drips like rivers from the pulpit. we enact laws to protect spineless and gutless hypocrites who talk their way to wealth and let all the dirty work done by worshipful volunteers. has our supreme leadership produced people who would shamelessly use laws to protect spineless and gutless leaders in our midst?
the way i see it, we are a nation where we promote gutless and spineless leaders!
    well done Singapore!

  29. Where leadership is concern, there is no room for frivolous forgiveness and tolerance. You put in the wrong leadership, you mislead an entire nation!

    No joke.

The issue here is …what kind of leadership you want to influence the next millennium people not, we should be kind or give second chance to snakes.

  30. Yes, in the name of peace( true or false?) we exalt the hypocrites.

  31. Dear fellow posters don’t get wind-up over ote’s comments. It is so obvious that his back-handed compliments to Pastor Rony Tan, the Police, AG officers, the Ministers and others are just his black-humour attempts of his self-importance. Even his self-proclaimed type of religion makes no testimony to his actual faith. ote said “God will be your ultimate Judge. I am very sure He will award you very high score for doing so well in this very difficult test”. A Christian will say he does not know Yahweh’s mind but only knows very well Yahweh’s will and commandments. Since ote cites neither of the two latter items… I leave you all to decide.
For someone who insisted in the importance of “genuine show of humility and remorse” looks increasingly facetious when gratuitously boasting that LEC and Pastor Rony can do well for all Singaporeans.
From now on, let him have his say in an audience of one: himself only.

  32. Here is a little information, may I share.
Now we have another avenue to listen to the world news.
On “Russia Today” Tv, there is an interesting “CrossTalk” program,
between Norman Finkelstein (a political scientist) vs Israel.
    http://www.youtube.com/russiatoday.
Words spoken were: punish, humiliate and terrorised.
And this preacher capitalised on ….. ?
    Armageddon?
Read some of the interpretations in
    //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armageddon

    So about deviated religious teachings…
    Some have been fooled ?
The god some is worshipping is unlawful ?
Some small countries governments follow or succumb to US demands at times?
R these countries being misled ? “God”?
And why the West axis was formed, which included as far as Australia, etc ?

    And Nostradamus ?
There is ”someone”  involved in this preacher too ?
Remember, this preacher also spoke of demonic spirit.

  33. Lee Hsien Loong has dismissed as superstition the chinese belief that children born in the year of the tiger are bad.  If Rony Tan were to say that, the mob would surely call for his arrest. Is the Lou Hei also superstition? If I were to teach my children the secret of success, I would say that knowledge and hardwork are keys to success.  Lou Hei has no part in it.  I will sternly dismiss it as superstition.
Am I then being insensitive and offensive?

  34. GrassHopper 18 February 2010

When the supreme leader says a day will come his father will lives in you, and he decrees that shrines will be erected all over the cities to collect revenues for this privilege, perhaps then, it will be a fairer comparison with the venerable Rony Tan.

  35. Look like Mr Oh will win this year’s Flame Award. Good job, Mr Oh, continue your nonsense and risk making more people irked.  Haha.

  37. Mr Oh, i started to notice that many wonderful things seems to happen because of you. You played a very critical role in many crisis when we reach a crossroad. I am very convinced that the only reason why good things were happening is becos of you. We need people like you to standup and make this world a better place and to heal the world. Can you help to also list out all the other good things that happen because of you during the last 10 years to motivate all of us ?

  41. Wonder really does anyone understands the scriptures at all !

    Gen 32:30
..for I have seen God face to face and, my life is preserved…

    JOHN 1:18
No man hath seen God at Any Time

    Some assholes !

If anyone is discerning, the bible has been abridged over time.

SO HEAR WHAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO HEAR ?
LISTEN TO WHAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO LISTEN ?

In Sarawak, Sabah and Africa. etc. ?

And dont forget, after the sing song sing song U still have to pay tithes monthly, yeah !

Will be checking bank account soon !

Some says no need to pay Income Tax somemore, true ?

  42. Fully support what Mr Shawn Lim had written.
He is truly a good and understanding Christian.

Noticed that Christian is the only religion that critizise other Faiths.   Even the Roman Catholic respect other religion.  This is all man-made not God’s doing.

  43. Roman catholics are christians too for your information

  44. Christain? 19 February 2010

If Shawn Lim claims to be a Christain, then he ought to know that he should not be advocating that Pastor Rony Tan be jailed or fined. Who is he to pass judgement on others? Is he trying to tell the authorities how to do their jobs? And since he was taught to ”love my neighbours, which would include people of other faiths,” all the more he should extend his love for Pastor Tan, who happens to share his faith.

  45. Christian? 19 February 2010

My apology for the misspelling of “Christian”

  46. Was 911 caused in some way by Religious thingies?
My basic understanding is islam and christianity have some overlap in their history of their sacred people.

so, have both of the religions got the facts right?

so both gods exist right? so should live in harmony what. people can believe in either truth right?

    Christian?,

I find your mentality a bit worrying.
there can be many types of people who claim to be a christian.
As long as a christian has done wrong, as he has admitted wrong doing, i do not see people cannot express their views on this wrong doer.
or are you saying that a christian should not criticise another who has done wrong simply because of their christianity?
    please clarify.

  48. Many likes to quote, but applying…..?

Anyway, here is an interpretation of ARMAGEDDON.

But in order to understand, needs to follow current affairs like the present Afghan war.

    Materials use:
    a) Definitely led by the US (the unlawful god);
         practises hegemony?; “own national interests”?
    b) Earth and the kings – true god !

    Why the fire?
To get rid of all the evidences of the atrocities the unlawful god has done, all this years.

In RussiaToday TV, it was reported that the US is already planning another war.
    Iran?

  49. Zoe, go easy on “Christian is the only religion that critizise other Faiths”. I do not think we, humans, are so bereft of intelligence and intellectual curiosity that “compare and contrast” analysis of any subject on Earth is ok, except, when it comes to religions. Then, we enter the neutered version of thinking… every item is sanitised and made fit for consumption. This may surprised many people, but Christians can and do debate with Yahweh. This phenomenon is both seen in the New and Old Testament, everyone who mattered gave his/her best shot. Debate, no matter how weighty the matter, is just so au naturel.

If I am to change the above quote to ‘Christians know and can articulate the differences between their faith and the other religions’, would this change the context you had in mind?

Religion is indeed a difficult topic to discuss but the fact of the matter is that this is one man’s indiscretion. There have been many views expressed in this thread and I hope all of us come out of this with a wider outlook than previously. Thank you all for contributing but the time has come to close this thread…
