  1. salaries for our PAP politicians are even 8.8% higher than their already astronomical salaries? even when our gdp was -2 to 10% (depending on which reference points)????

Despite all the mistakes they’v done, are they going to increase their salay this year again? Gosh, why do they need so much salaries beyond recognition to upkeep themselves while Singaporeans are struggling on 3 meals a day.  Something is not right in PAP, I smell corruptions developing into the public view now.

  3. Classic case of nepotism and cronism, where the emperor simply open the chest of gold and decides how much to reward his own eunuchs and concubines, while the measly peasants struggle to live from hand to mouth.

  4. Yamamoto 24 February 2010

They have ever increasing pay…but their performance doesn’t seem to justify that pay…

  5. Lying PAP 24 February 2010

as this year is a recession, they are going to increase their pay so that we can get the -1Billion Deficit this year.

No wonder our budget deficit is always -1B year in and year out. Any surplus will go into GIC and Temasek and maybe into their own pockets.

There has been public and political anger at banker bonuses and pay after the financial crisis. In this light I was very surprised to read this!!!
It is not clear if this rise is due to additional appointments or raise in salaries. It would be reasonable if the government is more transparent about their personal remuneration. Especially considering their very high level of compensation and current international trends of showing restraint on executive pay.

  7. JEROME PANG 24 February 2010

TOC, could you print again their salaries breakdown, this will give us a sense of the insane amount each of these ministers earn?

  8. I think u guys got it cheap for peanut when compared with the size of gdp. Even 100 million is not a large sum relatively when a single US CEO  can earn few hundred millions.

  9. The main difference is that a US CEO is not paid with public tax money (unless the company got a bail-out).
If you really want to treat Singapore as a company than we are by right the shareholders. And shareholders should be able to block any executive salary raise, like it has happened at HSBC just yesterday:

  10. How can we change this absurdity?

  11. Come on Singaporeans – there is no way you can change this. We voted for this government and you must trust them to do the job. Although we are not perfect, do note that we have much better capabilities and infrastructure compared to many countries. Not need to look too far – just see the state of roads, govt services etc across the sea to our neighbours.

For top talents, you must pay top dollars. It is as simple as that. Singapore is not a country – it is Singapore Inc. We have no choice no natural resources but to run this island like a Private Listed Company. Do you all have a better alternatives??

My only complain is that if they will to peg the pay to private listed companies, then they should be subjected to the same rigours Chairman of listed companies is required to face shareholders. So if you lose $40billion – please step down. I guarantee you there will be shreholder revolt if this happens in a American or british company and the Chairman refuse to step down.

Bottomline – I do not mind paying you the same as MNC as long as you perform.

Singaporeans, please look at pay objectively.

Excuse moir, are you the clone or adopted son/daughter of the famiLEE ?  Want to compare, why not have the foresight to look further to countries such as USA or Canada or even Japan ?  They are far more advanced than us, and remind me again, are these leaders being paid MILLIONS ?? Rest my case.

  15. it appears that utter greed and arrogance will do in a govt that has an otherwise relatively good trackrecord in history. Now that I am legally entitled to my citizens’ vote I wish this govt the best of luck at the coming elections.

  16. tiredsingaporean 24 February 2010

Bloody hell, after losing hundreds of billions of the peoples money, now they are resorting to rob from the citizens outright!

  17. YummyMummy 24 February 2010

Most of the infrastructure is ‘inherited’ by the present lot and everything is deteriorating fast.  In fact they are also destroying fast – bulldoze anything down to generate more money, build more, squeez more, everything is done for money, money and more money.  Strange thing is, citizens are having less, less and less money.

Have you lived as locals overseas to compare Govt services?  Anyone making silly statement like this only shows you are not to be taken seriously.

And you know how the financial crisis happened. A lot of overpaid fat cats in the USA. Bear in mind, US has USD where they could screw you with their consumption yet to be earned. Most countries do not have such benefits.

  19. as if LHL can be a CEO of a US company?
His level is not even PM material or Minister material.
What did he do that is of permanent value to Singapore?

  20. Vote Opposition 24 February 2010

Disgraceful act to have any pay increase when they have done nothing for Singaporeans.
The PAP govt is the most incompetent govt in the world.  MM, SM and PM are utterly useless. Half of Obama is better than all three put together and yet he earns so much less than them. Shame on the PAP ministers. Please find a place to hide yourself in shame.

1 of the shiek in 1 of the smaller middleast oilproducing country offerred to ^employ^ leehsienloong as the head of a newLEE revamped JTC inc when our prince brin in a hugh contigent of scholars for an needstolearn investment consultants in the mentioned middleast country just to give him some  face..why did the shiek offerred him a princedom instead?
without a doubt our prince dared NOT accept such challenges even though leehsienloon pegged himself to be on par with the TOP 10 ceos aroun the world…
    see talk is so cheap..but when challenged upon..hide behin a daddy’s apron…

  22. YummyMummy 24 February 2010

There is only one way to see if these guys will be hired as top CEOs of private companies, draw equivalent pay, get discretionary bonuse and get away with losses.  Vote them out.

Won’t it be soooo interesting to see.  If they are out of politics, and not getting employed privately, isn’t something not right?  So what if they have plenty of money to see them through?  If they are so clever and talented, they will want to use their talents and not sit around all day doing nothing right?

  23. sweeney 38 24 February 2010

    Absolutely Outragesous!!

How much more money do you want?
“Do you want your meals at hawker centre,  food court  or  restaurant”??

Disgusting!!  Shameful!!  Greedy bunch of  idiots!!!

  24. OB marker 24 February 2010

wah piang! heong man! GDP minus oso got pay raise? If next year got surplus ,meaning +18% increment? where got such thing in this world! oops! sorry! they are in their own galaxy! 3 cheers PAP!!

  25. As Singapore is a Company not Country, they deserve to be paid like CEO. As citizens or shareholders, you have the right to vote them out if you are not happy but then 66% voted them in so majority rule. This is good governance where majority rule and you have to respect the WILL of the majority even though you may not like it. This is also call democracy. So if Singapore is run like a Company, paying few hundred millions to so many CEO is really peanut.

  26. of course if you vuew Singapore as a country, then the salary is too high!

  27. Give me a break 24 February 2010

“For top talents, you must pay top dollars”

If this is Singapore Inc, NONE, I repeat, NONE of the top talents has made me a single cent on my dollar.  Thats what business is about, making money for shareholders, using shareholders money.  These top talents have instead made me poorer.  Maybe this itself is talent to you.  I certainly won’t approve the appointment of such a CEO.

  28. Give me a break 24 February 2010

    Walou

Is there any dividend paid so far?  If dividend is less than tax (non transactionable shares), that is not counted.  If Spore is a company, every individual tax payer aka shareholder of Spore Inc is making huge losses.  So we should fire the lot of them!

  29. Give me a break 24 February 2010

    Walou

It is 66% of the constituencies with no walk-overs, it is not 66% of the population of Spore.  This inaccuracy has gone stale and you guys still use it. Buay siah suay.

  30. Shock at the Quality of Our Minister 24 February 2010

Final Nail to their coffins for their downfall

  31. The excess monies is to bribe those in govt that are thinking of not supporting LHL.
It is also a last minute bank job to squeeze as much monies as possible from Singaporeans before the old fucker dies.
It will be funny if LHL dies first.
I wonder how LKY will be thinking at that time.

  32. The more we hear about Ministers’ and Parliament Secretaries’  pay, the more we feel upset
and indignant, more so when we feel our pay is reducing in purchasing power, and our
family members having difficulties finding work.
No wonder MM Lee said there is no real eqaulity in Singapore, it’s only an aspiration. The
Pledge should be discarded, as it is an insult to the ordinary people.

  33. tiredsingaporean 24 February 2010

they do have the skin as thick as an elephant to reward themselves when the people are still suffering, it makes one wonders are they now resorting to cleaning up the nation reserve when they know that their time is up?

  34. mice is nice 24 February 2010

so many issues for opposition parties to pick, turn he heat up for the ruling incumbent, better don’t slack, not sure if there will be as good a chance anot…

  35. PeeAndPoo 25 February 2010

Ever wonder WHY Old man the Fortuneteller said some years ago that the future govt cannot question the present govt about its assets or coffers?
WHY GIC or Temasek would never reveal its true financial situation or its exact losses;though they are taxpayers’ money too?
WHY Power is vested in just One Party(or rather One Family) all these decades?
WHY the ruling party is paranoid whenever the GE gets near…?
The same Old Soothsayer once said”Everyone has a price.” So in order not to let the dirty tricks be exposed, isn’t it obvious to “reward” when necessary??

  36. theforgottongeneration 25 February 2010

    @Give me a break, Feb 24, 2010 22:18

People that keeps coining this 66% stuff are really annoying. Maybe brainwashed by the media, or a bootlicker, or just plain dumb. My advice to them is to pls take some time to find out how the 66% came about. Actually, only 34% of eligible voters voted for the ruling party, 44% were denied their constitutional rights to vote because of walkovers, 17% voted opposition & balance were spoilt votes/no show. What is shocking is that 34% vote can get them 98% of parliament. The opposition 17% only gives them 2% parliament. Still think “66%” is by a fair fight, that 66 out of 100 every voters actually said “Aye”?

I really fault the opposition for not educating the people about such facts over the past 3-4 years. I would think they can raise hell with this type of ammo, about the political system Singapore has. Maybe RP can do something about it.

  37. Folks,

This is obviously so wrong!!!! Blatantly doing daylight robbery!!!  These dummies must be dump into the next coming GE..

I cannot swallow anymore of all this nonsense anymore~~ How many of  you out there still can swallow it and keep mum and let them squeeze???

Either they are voted out or we vote ourselves out!!! No negotitations!

  38. Its high time our government and civil servants recognised that they are over=paid in relation to the ordinary man in the street. When the PAP first came in, all government officers suffered a 50% pay cut. Hope the next non-PAP govenment will do the same thing.

  39. sweeney 38 25 February 2010

Minister  Shamugan said , Singapore is not a country but,  a  city!
Are their $$$millions  obscene salaries, justifiable?

Disgusting!!  Bunch of imbeciles  and abusers of  public  resources!!
