“If you want to fight for freedom, use the liberties of the new media wisely and responsibly, not abuse it. But then again, this is the same guy who engages in cyber-bullying and who accused a female judge of “sleeping” with the politicians. How much credibility would you have expected?”

  1. Has Gopalan’s hoax hurt anybody? Are we running him down just because he made a joke about the inevitable? Is his hoax more despicable than the following perpetuated by the govt and its media over the years? That our CPF will see us through retirement. That HDB flats are affordable. That the GRC system ensures minority representation in parliament. That the judiciary is independent. That foreign workers ensure a properous economy. That white horse platoons do not exist in SAF. That the stop at two policy was good. That opposition like JBJ and CSJ were out to destroy Singapore. That Mas Selamat escaped through the toilet. Gopajan Nair has given all of us a wake up call: That all information should be thoroughly checked. That we are not prepared for the inevitable passing of LKY. That we still cannot take a joke.

Andy, a wrong is a wrong. Based on your argument, it is ok to sin because others have also sinned. Do you really take this as a joke or have you decided that you want to call this a wake up call by this mischievious chap? I am not a supporter of the RP and support the cause to fight for a change in the system but that does not mean that we have to do it in a low down manner, hitting below the belt. If you were him, will you do the exact same thing as what nair did, in writing the ‘wake-up joke’?

And to answer your question on whether he hurt anybody, the answer is yes, he hurts himself. Whatever he write henceforth will be hugely discounted, there will be no credibilty at all, even if he were to tell the truth. That, is the ultimate hurt.

  3. If Gopalan had made this joke on April 1st, would you or anybody take as much offence? If you claim that he did harm only to yourself, then why would you or anyone else get so worked up for? I have not read a single good argument that what he did was wrong other than the two common emotional responses : That he lied to me! That he had the balls to even suggest that the great Lee Kuan Yew is dead! Here’s another thought : What if it wasn’t LKY, but say, S.R. Nathan. or Wong Kan Seng or Mah Bow Tan that Gopalan played a prank on. Would there be the same reaction? I think Gopalan has ignited a debate on free speech on internet. The people who are calling to boycott him just because of one posting are, to me, just as intolerant as LKY himself are to his critics. When LKY sues, he does so not just to correct one error. He does it to destroy his opponent, TOC is displaying the same LKY instinct.

  4. Correction to above. I meant : If you claim that he did harm only to himself, then why do you or anyone else get so worked up for?

hi andy, your reply tell me that you are a very intelligent person. your argument in defending nair reflect your adoration for him. i respect your point of view in being his great fan, very agreeable to what he wrote in this instance. i ask only of you to respect my view that i have the choice not to agree, or even despise what he did, is it acceptable to him.

being the intelligent person you are and your ardent support for nair, it is my hope that you can share with me the intention of nair for writing this self-claim hoax? i really like to learn from you. i am not as educated as you to understand that it is perfectly alright to curse someone and even place an exact time on when the heart attack happened.

    please teach me, can?

  6. Condescending post. You’re obviously not interested in debate. How is making a joke about someone having a heart attack a curse? What kind of superstition you subscribe to? We’re all gonna die one day, some sooner than others. Numerous others in forums here and others have wished for LKY’s death. You may wish to express your revolt at every one of them.
