A spokesperson from the Ministry of Health (MOH) speaking to The New Paper said that Minister for Health Khaw Boon Wan, 57,  had by-pass surgery on Tuesday.

The New Paper reported that Mr Khaw’s doctors advised him to go for the surgery after a health check last week.

Writing his blog in December 2009, the Health Minister said that Singaporeans with underlying chronic diseases should try and avoid future medical complications by monitoring and managing the disease.  In the blog, he also stressed the importance of early intervention based on good family physician-patient relationship and timely medical advice.

Here is Today’s report about it, posted on its website at 05.55 am on 6 May.

Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan (picture) has undergone a heart bypass on the advice of his doctor.

The decision for the surgery, which was performed on Tuesday, was made after Mr Khaw had gone for a coronary angiogram, which is an X-ray test to check the blood vessels and chambers of the heart.

A spokesperson from the Ministry of Health said Mr Khaw was fit and well prior to the operation.

She added that the procedure went smoothly and Mr Khaw is doing well and is hopeful of a speedy recovery.

‘cuse me TOC, but how does such news affect people like me struggling to pay bills and only option now seems to retire in JB? Frankly, if he gets well or kick the bucket, how does that affects me one bit?

I was a regular blood donor & does Mr. Khaw knows the benefits for donors? Any? ZERO. If my immediate kin/spouse is on the operating table besides Mr. Khaw and they take out some bags of blood previously donored by me, guess who has priority for the blood transfusion?

I wish to clarify that there are many people having similar surgery day-in, day-out. What so big deal that a minister has one? He too poor that the media hope people will donate for his expenses? Maybe part of his high pay includes acting for MediaCorp as and when needed? I hope TOC didn’t pay any endorsement fee to him too.

So many heartless souls here. This poor guy has just went thru a by-pass, have his breast bone plied open and surely deserved all the compassion that we can give him.

He is, afterall, Minister that is so well-deserving of the MILLIONS that we pay him anally, sori, I mean annually.

He must get well soon, so that he can quicky resume his mission to send all our old, sickly and destitutes to our neighbouring soil for Fermentation, oops, sori again, I mean FirstClass treatment.

Let’s all pray that he enjoys a speedy recovery, will not have a relapse soon as at his age, I doubt his breast bone can sustain another ply opening. Also pray well that he can resist all the fat-ladden char kuay teow, laksa and what have you during his RARE appearance at constituency walk-arounds.

Kelong, oops, I mean Long live COW, oops again, I mean KHAW.

Maybe next election LHL will absord Khaw’s ward into AMK GRC …. to give him a bit ‘up’

SingaSingaporean 6 May 2010 how many people here have experienced healthcare for low income patients? I must be thankful that they waived hospital charges for my parents during times they do not have money. All we have to do is write in, many consultation charges and drugs are provided free, even x-rays and stuff. Sometimes they allowed us deferred payment or instalments.
    ……………………….

    hav you even tried recentLEE?
    nowadays..the rules are simple…
    no money upfront..no treatments…~PERIOD~
and if you all think i am bluffin..try visitin the outpatient/checkin clinics…

This is the same Health Minister, who during the last election, brought out the subject of ‘means testing’ for patients. After the citizens’ kpkb, he quickly mentioned he will not implement
‘means testing’ But as soon as PAP had the mandate to govern, he lost no time at all to push the ‘means testing’ thingy
tru’ That’s the true colour of this minister!! Since when have you all ever
heard him asking the govt. on the citizens’ behalf to increase the GDP on
health care for Singaporeans?? Other First World countries are increasing their health care budget, whereas ours
have been stagnant, inspite of the fact that our population has increased by a staggering figuare!!
Instead, this minister took the easy way out by asking the citizens to increase the contribution to the Medisave!!
Remember the time he told you folks to dump your old and unproductive parents to some godforsaken place in JB??
This will come true if he ever get the mandate from ‘daft’ Singaporeans!!

One thing is clear;never trust a politician. The day of noble, caring, selfless gentleman politician which care for its people is rare. It’s the good fortune of the people who are lucky to have such good leader and I don’t perceive any such personality in our government. We can only beseech the kind grace of “Almigthy” to help us redress this dire situation.

To answer C’s question why Khaw BW is not in Malaysian hospital when he requested S’porean to send their old sick parents there is simply because his hospitalisation is fully paid for First Class (A1) by all taxpayers money.

He doesn’t pay a cent and is a VIP patient. So, who you are and what you are as a human makes ‘heaven and hell’ of a difference. So, all human are the same, some are more shame, oops more same than others.

This guy was the party mouthpiece that announced with a quirk face that $70 millions was spent building 3 new nursing homes in S’pore. That was how much the garhem cares, blah, blah,… That was the same time Tharma admitted that TH lost $50+ BILLIONS in investments. If Khaw is really concern about healthcare here, he would have demanded for just say $1-2 billions from the amount allocated to our SWFs, and put those to our health services. Instead, we have ppl like from cancer society, Home for the Aged, etc. going door-to-door asking (I hate to use begging) for donations because they don’t receive any govt funds. We have celebrities turned trained monkeys every year just to raise a couple millions for various welfare causes…. in reality, the amount allocated to our social welfare is just a pittance compared to that of SWFs allocations. You guys think Mr-get-well-soon is ignorant of these things? Even some portions of his high salary should be allocated to the needy. Did he volunteer to take a pay cut to help the most affected of the NGO/VGO healthcare organisations during this recession? Did allocation to our healthcare/welfares increased by 8.8%?

For those well-wishers/bootlickers, do you send a “best wishes” card to the thousands of needy out there that don’t have the privilege of first class medical healthcare that our ministers are accorded immediately?

Heart a heart and DON’T BE to KBW so “heartless” like harry you hate for his to you! Two wrong don’t make one right!

And this is NOT the time to be mean. And you’ll exactly like the PAP ministers when you are mean to KBW just because he is a PAP minister!

Frankly, I’m no harry supporter for good and sane reasons. But KBW I think he has been doing his best. And do know too the even with his hands someone “tied” by “hairy’ mind boggling ideas, he has got increases in govt spending for Health-Care! From some 1.5% to now 4.5% of Expenditure Budget. And he is still trying to increase that for an aging population too!

I’ll even visit him in hospital if possible. His intentions I can see are real and concerning. Know that he has problems and “restrictions” within. He if in the fact the only minister worthy of respect for now.

  20. While I wish Mr Khaw a speedy recovery, I would like to remind everyone of his incompetence over the handling of the NKF affair. He was the first high official to come out fighting on the behalf of TT Durai and the NKF before all the facts came out.

As far as I’m concerned, I wouldn’t trust Khaw Boon Wan to run a kindergarten let alone our ministry of health.

    Laugh not.
For you might also be the next victim.
People don’t bargain for such things?
Even Kings, queens, popes, etc., succumb to sicknesses and illnesses because in their hearts, like you, they choose to laugh at the victims of such unfortunate diseases.

A good cyclist might get killed because of negative externalities.

Likewise, you may after all the self controls, die unconsciously of cancer because the the drinking water is polluted, the contaminated lead air you breathe, etc.

  22. I also just remembered an arrogant comment that Mr Khaw made after a report tabled by the Economic Remaking Committee (Tourism), sometime in 1999 or early 2000. One of the proposals in that report was for the opening of casinoes in Singapore. Mr Khaw was one of the first to jump on that proposal and if I remember correctly, he said something to the effect that Singapore will only see casinoes opened “over my dead body”. Can anyone remember that comment?

Well, Mr Khaw, I suppose this is your karma coming back to you now that we’ve got two casinoes up and running.

    I fully support Buddhist – 8 May 2010.

We shdn’t make fun of people who are sick like Vegemight. You’ll reap what you sow.

Misfortunes can befall and confront anyone.

Sometimes sicknesses don’t come by choice.

Bad genes is also a very likely cause.

Let’s all wish Minister Khaw well.

In fact (I’m apolitical) everyone can see he works very hard for the common people.

He’s just a senior government officer headhunted to serve the country.

He deserves the money he earns.

The healthcare industry creates 1 000s of jobs. The spin-offs? Our polys and hospitals are world class. Rich foreigners from near and far come here for treatment boosting our hospitality and food industries. We contain many deadly diseases like SARS.

My wife is a nurse who helps to put food on the table for children.

Singapore is much better than many, many countries around the world.

So please don’t open your filty trap without thinking. OK?

Alternatively, any long term and viable constructive solutions in a market-economy country?

Thank you Malaysia for kicking him out.

Health Minister Khaw has been preaching about healthy living for many years.
Many people including his subordinates have praised him as an idol for practising strict diet and regular exercise.

Today,it was reported that for years, he has been on medication for cholesterol problem and it might lead to his current heart problem.
As a Health minister, he cannot control his cholesterol problem, how can we continue to believe in his health policies and talks about healthy living.

It is very ironical for him to preach about healthy eating and exercise and yet he has failed to lead by example.

None of the PAPaya Minister’s came from poor famiLEES including Khaw Boon Wan.
If any of the above came from a poor background he should understand the difficulties of many ordinary Singaporean’s especially for those in need of medical attention.
You got so much Medisave but you only allow to use minimum amount of it at any polyclinics for chronic illness consultation and medication. As for hospital’s across the causeway, almost all the medical bills are fully subsidised by the government but not here in SG.What so difficult to adopt it?
