James Goh

The party had already commenced the night before with throngs of the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) crowd from different parts of the European Union (EU) and beyond descending upon one of the most popular gay capitals in Europe – London. It was London’s Gay Pride Parade 2010 in celebration of 40 years of gay liberation.

Amidst the air of jubilance and nervous anticipation of what the day will bring, I joined in for the first time in a gay pride parade which marched from Baker street to Trafalgar Square. The scene was a sea of rainbow flags and blaring music from incredulously colourful floats. I was extremely heartened and secretly envious that the LGBT crowd could march proudly in public with their partners and family members, both young and old, in tow.

Members of the LGBT parade contingent enthusiastically engaged fellow comrades and curious onlookers lining the parade route by giving out pro-LGBT brochures and badges. It was a casual and friendly atmosphere designed to put everyone and anyone at ease, but under the enduring truth that as “Love is a human right”, LGBTs deserve the same rights to love and be loved regardless of their sexuality.

As the crowd congregated at the parade destination of Trafalgar Square, feelings of camaraderie climaxed; the crowd grooved to the music projected from the center stage of the mega outdoor party. The party spirit was stoked by the heat of the summer sun and the abundance of love and unconditional acceptance that was in the air.

A reporter at the event asked me for my sentiments as an Asian about this annual event, and many from the local community quizzed me about the general acceptance of Singaporeans toward the LGBT community. Many of them found it incomprehensible that our globalized and cosmopolitan society still criminalized sex between mutually consenting adults and were quick to offer their sympathies that I would be returning to Singapore to live under such a legally repressive environment.

As tourists marvel at the modernity and ever changing landscape of Singapore, and as we gallop ahead in the development of our sophisticated business and research infrastructure and climate, the legal standpoint on LGBT issues (i.e. section 377A of the Singapore Penal Code) has not turned a page as Singapore chronicles chapters upon chapters in her other areas of development and progress (for example, the presence of  casinos in the integrated resorts).

As London’s Gay Pride 2010 goes into yet another chapter of UK’s history, Singapore is still stuck in a limbo about her official stand towards LGBTs in our society, due to the preservation of section 377A of the penal code. Perhaps it is time for decision-makers to take direction from our very own citizens: our citizens who have demonstrated the capacity to embrace liberalism by participating in the Pinkdot campaign to support their LGBT family members and friends; our citizens who cheered on the first LGBT contingent made up of only two but extremely brave souls who marched proudly  with the rainbow flag through the Chingay 2010 parade to demonstrate the true diversity that exists in our society.

I’d just like to share with you some thoughts of another fellow Singaporean who attended the London parade. Preferring to remain annonymous, he commented, “The main impression I got from the pride parade was the sense of total freedom enjoyed – freedom to celebrate who you are and what you do without fear of repercussions and reprisals. Everyone is just having a good time, without having to look over their shoulders. There were gay, straight, bi, whatever, just enjoying the festivities for the sake of it, and not having to prove a point (too much) or even think that it was a political statement. I hate how everything back home is reduced to a matter of politics and policy, including the area of who to love.”

In a society where change is a part of our culture, it is now time to cease being ironic, to legally acknowledge and accord every LGBT citizen of Singapore his equal right – the human right to love and be loved for who they truly are.

The author is a returning Singaporean student who completed his tertiary education in Europe. He hopes to maintain awareness about the injustice done to the local LGBT crowd associated with keeping section 377A of the Penal Code of Singapore through his short article. He hopes that section 377A of the Penal Code could be repealed as a first step for the open social acknowledgement and acceptance of the Singaporean LGBT crowd.

Here we go again. Oh no! While as much as I want to affirm LGBT, it really breaks my heart that they cannot have children of their own.

It is already so hard to have kids due to the rising costs inflicited upon by the PAPayas…

Now, because I love kids, please stop. It’s not healthy.

  3. Well i dont discriminate LGBT. I treat them as a human being just like any one of us.

But the fact is it is still go against the nature commands. Because in the beginning, God created man and woman to become one flesh and be conceived for many generations. Something that we cannot go against the course of the nature that has been set in the beginning. Once we cross that border line, there will be hefty consequences to be paid.

No offense to the LGBT. Im expressing the realness and the true hard cold cruel facts behind as a LGBT.

The more this “LGBT” stuffs are highlighted, the more I realize how delusional and confused are the minds of those embracing it. To confuse what is natural and is unnatural, not able to distinguish between the two, make all kind of justification for it.

Perhaps it is true then that God who created all things and give human the freedom to know the truth and love accordingly, also allow them the freedom to live in their own delusion, their own condemnation, their own destruction if the truth does not match their expectation.

It is our own conduct, own choice who will bring judgment and condemnation upon us.

The PAP government has emphasized many times it wants Singapore to be a secular society and that includes opening up more avenues to cultural and lifestyle expressions. It takes time to change the traditional mind-set of many citizens here. The Singapore politicians are no fools and they do not want to have a fight in the political arena with its citizens. All they want is how to control that political arena. In another word, how to made changes without losing votes.
Mr.James Goh,do not be weary, things will come your way in a not too distant future.Remember last week, the Singapore Media Control Board decided not to ban the first ever erotic film made in Singapore.Did you hear any out-cry from the public?.Perhaps, our government is testing the water.

    @Serious Sombre

From the American Psychological Association: The longstanding consensus of the behavioral and social sciences and the health and mental health professions is that homosexuality per se is a normal and positive variation of human sexual orientation (Bell, Weinberg & Hammersmith, 1981; Bullough, 1976; Ford & Beach 1951 ; Kinsey, Pomeroy, & Martin, 1948; Kinsey, Pomeroy, Martin, & Gebhard, 1953 ).

From the Royal College of Psychiatrists: It would appear that sexual orientation is biological in nature, determined by a complex interplay of genetic factors and the early uterine environment. Sexual orientation is therefore not a choice.

Also, your reference to evolution is laughable. If evolution nv gets it wrong, then it’s a stronger case for saying homosexuality falls within the normal variation of sexual orientation. If homosexual traits are unsustainable in evolutionary terms, than the modern human being has had 200,000 years to dispatch them. Much longer if you extend the trail of human evolution. But it persisted.

    @yaya

With all due respect, your religious beliefs is your own. Public policy ought to be secular.

    @Hmmm….

Your definition of normality is very subjective. Do you mean that its rate of occurrence is low?

    @This is An Abomination

Why should this be an abomination? You can only frame it to be so from a narrow religious perspective. Have you heard secular humanism, atheism, agnosticism?

judging by the comments / views of some of the readers, we are a very long way from such a possibility.

Unfortunately, as a gay person, i’m realising that maybe it’s not so much the government of singapore that’s opposed to this as much as the common folk are. I mean comments left here represent the common folk more than they do the goverment don’t they? and some of these comments give us some sort of indication of where our society stands with regards to this issue and unfortuantely it’s a very conservative one.

views such as accepting the person but not accepting the act. view such as the insistence that it is a choice and not an act of nature…

the lgbt community here is a long way from even being socially accepted as normal and equal. let’s not even talk about the possibility of celebrating it openly.

Come, come now Vgcat you’ve shot yourself in the foot by quoting Kinsey, Pomeroy, & Martin,

“It is amazing to observe how many psychologists and psychiatrists have accepted this sort of propaganda, and have come to believe that homosexual males and females are discretely different from persons who respond to natural stimuli. Instead of using these terms as substantives which stand for persons, or even as adjectives to describe persons, they may better be used to describe the nature of the overt sexual relations, or of the stimuli to which an individual erotically responds.”
—Alfred C. Kinsey, Wardell B. Pomeroy, and Clyde E. Martin, Sexual Behavior in the Human Male, 1948, pp. 616-617

Dr. Richard Isay, (the champion of the ‘gay genes’) research has been found wanting because it ignores (evolution theory) of the Process of Natural Selection of the survival of the species.

The ‘gay gene’ hypothesis ignores the following important scientific fact: “The biological inevitability of reproductive sexuality is the principle without which biological determinism would fall apart. Reproductive heterosexuality is not simply another trait that is genetically transmitted; it is the foundational principle of the entire theory”

“Isay’s goal in endorsing the genetic determination of homosexuality is to ensure that homosexual men are not pathologized simply on the basis of their same-sex desire. It is his hope that acceptance of the “gay gene” will imbue homosexuality with the same “natural” status accorded reproductive heterosexuality. (Perhaps this is why he disregards the abundant literature criticizing the research he cites.) However, this strategy can never work, because what Isay ignores, or believes he can somehow bypass, is that reproductive sexuality (conflated with heterosexuality) is the absolute bedrock of biologically deterministic theory. Without the cornerstone of a biologically inevitable reproductive sexuality, there would be no mechanism to guarantee the transmission of genes, and that is precisely the point of biological determinism. The biological inevitability of reproductive sexuality is the principle without which biological determinism would fall apart. Reproductive heterosexuality is not simply another trait that is genetically transmitted; it is the foundational principle of the entire theory. It must be presumed as the imperative of life itself for the transmission of biological traits to even be possible. Given this fundamental and exalted position, it is difficult to see how reproductive sexuality and homosexuality can ever be presumed “equal” but “different” within a biologically deterministic framework. The logic of biological determinism can only debase homosexuality as deviant—precisely the position Isay is striving to counter.
—Ona Nierenberg, “A Hunger for Science: Psychoanalysis and the ‘Gay Gene,’” differences, Vol. 10, No. 1

Homosexuality is a deviant behavior. I am not saying it is immoral. You be the judge of that.

This is not science. A virus (HIV or otherwise) infect a hunman being whether he/she is gay or lesbian or straight. The scientific statement is….. any sex will carry a rist of contracting HIV. HIV is not limited to GLBT.

And more ironical is that you also are already slapping a face on yourself already. You have said that HIV is not limited to LGBT, so it is clear that it is included for LGBT too. The only thing that i can says is that it is your own depraved mine who just want the whole world to agree with you and accept and condone you and validate you that what you are doing is right and not disgusting. That’s all. When i can say that it is not necessary and no need for the whole world to agree with you. Everyone owns their own view point , and it is not for you to try to pervert it o change their viewpoint on the actions doings of LGBT. If you dont even know how to respect peoples’ view, then dont expect choices of respect be given to you because you dont deserve it. I dont speak for all LGBT ,except you!!!

Last but not least, the love of Jesus is pure and holy. But are you??? Who are you to compare His love and your love with another guy? What a nut you are! Also His love does not mean that he condemns LGBT but He does condones their actions !!!! Its in the bible. And im not going to waste my time and energy here to quote the scriptures. If you really so sincere want to find the truth, then go and search it yourself if you really want to seek the truth. No spoon feeding here. Lastly, you are not even a God, so dont put yourself into the same pedestral scale and position with a God. Mind you!!!!

By 1995, the trend started, initially no body notice it…. but it exploded by 2000, and really bad since 2003……… Now, the doctors world-wide find that, now the rate of increase is highest in heterosexual woman.

RATE-of INCREASE : let me explain (i am using hypothetical number)

lets say, 10000 men (9000 heterosexual, 1000 homosexual)
    10000 women (9600 heterosexual, 400 homosexual)

the 9000 heterosexual man, 50 is HIV positive = 5.5%, 8950 is HIV negative.
the 1000 homosexual man, 100 is HIV positive=10%, 900 is HIV negative.

You very happy, the proportion of HIV in homosexualmale is higher… (actually, hypothetical data, it is not 10% gay man has HIV) and hetero-man is 5.5%

    the 9600 heterosexual woman, 190is HIV positive = 2%
1000 lesbian, 20 is HIV positive = 2% (well, initially, heteroWOMAN and Lesbian are roughly the same in ration)

Well, after 2003, we find that
    the 9000HeteroMAN, 630 is HIV positive = 7%
    the 1000 HomoGay man, 120 is HIV positive = 12 %

the 9600 heterosexual woman, 380 is HIV positive = 4%
but the 1000 lesbian, still about 20-30 positive = 2-2.5%

You still very happy, and the anti-gay-homophobes will still tell you…. see see, the homo-gay man has highest ration, ie 12%…. and they trumpet that in all the conservatives webpage.

But you look at what happen between 1985 and 2005…….
the heteroMAN ratio increases from 5% TO 7%…..
the HomoGAY man ratio increases from 10% to 12%….
(ie, for MAN, all HIV increases by 2%)

    BUT
for HeteroWOMAN, ratio increases from 2% to 4%
for lesbian, ration remain relatively unchanged, or 2% become 2.5%
(reason….. the sexual practice for lesbian never really change over the years)
NOW you seen, what it means by RATE of INCREASE.
    **************
    In 1985, homoman incidence(ratio) =10%
    In 2005, homoman incidence(ratio) =12%

    Rate of increase 12-10 / 10 = 20% (Homosexual Man)
    *************
    In 1985, heteroman incidence(ratio) =5%
    In 2005, heteroman incidence(ratio) =7%

    Rate of increase 7 – 5 / 5 = 40% (Heterosexual Man)
    **************
    In 1985, heteroWOMAN incidence(ratio) =2%
    In 2005, heteroWOMAN incidence(ratio) =4%

    Rate of increase 4-2 / 20 = 100%
    **************
    In 1985, homoWOMAN incidence(ratio) =2%
    In 2005, homoWOMAN incidence(ratio) =2.5%

    Rate of increase 2.5-2 / 2 = 25%
    *****************

    WHY ???
Because the stupid anti-gay-homophobes sell the idea that “HIV and AIDS is a gay disease” so the stupid heterosexual man believe in it, and have unprotected sex……. and pass it to their wife.

The heterowoman wife thinks…… HIV is gay disease, since my husband is married to me, he is not a gay, so dont have disease….. and that is how these heteroWomen get HIV…….. from their husband. Dont forget, there are 7% of heteroMan who have sex with the women and get them infected.

But it does not affect the lesbian….. because, the gay men dont have sex with the lesbian…….. Lesbian continue to have sex amongst themselves, so their ratio never really changed.

Now, Homophobes, please continue to spread your lies. Because your lies will be borne by the HeteroWoman.

Do you still want to say, HIV and AIDS is a gay man diseases ??

And let the HeteroWoman get infected through their husbands ??

I have gay friends who turned straight, got married, and have children. I think we should have organizations to help homosexuals in this. Not just discriminate against them.

This is an appeal to the owner and host of this forum and this online platform (not for discussion).
    -
It is no secret that it has been propagating the alternative lifestyle and all its encompassing components of gay practices as well as derision of all and everything that do not embrace these components the way that they do.
    -
More importantly, being the insecure people that they are, being the muddle-headed people that they are, living the uncertainty of who they are and what they are – they now endeavour to teach the larger society to live a life of love and loving embrace the way they do.
    -
Pray tell, how do you seriously expect anyone to do that when you keep deriding, and to use a stronger word; “blaspheme”, the faith and beliefs of those who have an inclination toward the spiritual, of religion and of God? Where is the moderation when moderation is warranted?
    -
Is it a lack of understanding of those who believe there is a higher Being Who needs to be listened to and from Whom we seek advice in our day to day affairs in the quiet of our hearts? Is it not also the same ‘lack of understanding’ the gays are accusing the non-gays of?
    -
So why become the pot that calls the kettle black?
    -
I suggest each one go back into the little corners of our rooms to reflect on this. How do you think we can grow into a harmonious human race, respecting and living side by side in the true name of Love?
    -
I have commented many times before that to understand the two types of ‘love’ propagated here, we have to understand what they are.
    -
In the gay context, it is loving one another as a human being, free to choose the lifestyles and practices each one decides for himself and herself, and of equal treatment.
    -
This is contrary to the religious context (well, at least the Christian context), where Love is to care for the inner being who will live through eternity, not the temporal abode it is confined in, the body.
    -
Love therefore is a spiritual one and when put to practice will seem to non-believers that we are preaching, encroaching and enforcing ourselves on public space.
    -
It will need the two camps to come together to discuss this at a deeper level and this is why I am making this plea. My plea is for TOC to stop promoting the gay ‘agenda’. It will only lead to the crimination of God by the gays. This is too serious for anyone to handle. It will also set the two camps further apart.
    -
I understand that you are a Christian and TOC was pretty much a very well-liked platform deserving the plaudits it had deserved. But of late, as it grew bigger with many more helpers jumping into the bandwagon, it has to ‘diversify’ itself in terms of contents. But to carry more articles on one subject that is of not much concern to the larger population is something else.
    -
I beg that there be less articles promoting the gay lifestyle. There are more important matters to address and to focus on.
    -
I understand also that there are a number of gays in TOC who may influence your decision making process. I ask that you take back what belongs to you and do not be led by the gays and their purpose.
    -
This will be my last post on TOC. Fare thee well – and thanks for the memories.

  50. Another observation:
When I was in a boy’s school, I had friends who were gays in my school. Now these “gays” are happily married to women and have kids. This is one observation that environment plays a part in developing one’s sexuality. Yes u can be gay. But no, don’t keep telling everyone “it is normal” or “don’t suppress your feelings”. No I don’t want my kids to told these things, becos to me, I want them to remain heterosexual.
