Letter by Leong Sze Hian to Straits Times forum page published on 14 August 2010:
I REFER to yesterday’s report (“Caterer acts after criticism of YOG food”).
It states: “The committee did not respond to questions on how much was budgeted for volunteers’ meals and whether there had been any guidelines for food provision.”
Since volunteers are not paid, I think the least that organisers could do is provide them with decent meals. As Singapore is hosting the first Youth Olympic Games, which will be reported by media internationally, such news does not bode well for Singapore’s reputation.
In the interest of public accountability, and given the fact that the YOG budget is already almost four times over the original budget, the following questions should be answered:
- How much was budgeted for each meal of a volunteer? Was it a problem with the budget or a case of the caterer scrimping to make more money perhaps?
- Was a tender exercise done to award the catering budget? If so, was it given to the lowest bidder, and what was the second highest bid?
Answering the above questions may help to ensure that similar problems do not occur in future events.

Most volunteers will be mentally prepared to finish their unvolunteer task, volunteer work is doing willing for the right task, right people, right organisations and the right gov.
high time
agree
‘Don’t worry and no need to reply as daft S’poreans will soon forget about it.’With this I urge fellow S’poreans to summon enough courage and get out of this doldrum of so many decades of manipulation by the MIW.We’ve to unite together and make a difference to the ruling regime and not to be taken for granted anymore.Too much harms and damages had already been inflicted to us and our descendants with their self-serving and inapt policies. From the many adverse and unhappy reports by participants and attendants,it proves to us the mediocrity of the government in running this YOG
A bunch of morons, it give us an idea of the leaders mentality, how they treat Singaporeans and try to get away with it, not until we make noise. Things have changed with the net. People vote out or spoil the vote at your area if you have the chance to, the PAP.
those volunteers should just boycott YOG and quit.
Why just let a meal of dog food served to u and humiliate u peoples as volunteers. even if they going to improve the food by adding a few more dishes, but please dont because of added dishes and given your your most basic himan dignity, that is God-given backbones. Dont let humilation to add to your only human dignity as a human being volunteers should have and remain it so.
Really honestly speaking,i am not exagerating, the food i give to my dog looks much better than the one shown in the paper. Sorry to hurt those being forced to attend the YOG.
Does it matter whether it is a budget issue, or a case of the caterer scrimping ?
If it is a budget issue, what is the revised amount compared to the entire scheme of things ? ($387m is a budgeted amount, that includes a portion of the pay of the minister and other policy makers right ?)
If it is a case of caterer scrimping, where are the guidelines to tighten and monitor what was offered ? Don’t think the media has blown this out of proportion.
No accountability again right, ?
I simply cannot comprehend all these. Why are we discussing about all these non issues?
Why are we asking for better food?
In the first place, why can’t we give them the same food as what we gave the guest?
We should demand that our boys and girls are given the same food as the guest. Period.
If the quest are fed the same exact YOG food as shown in the picture in this article, so be it, then our boys and girls will have those food with no complaints. Now, you guys get it?
Is that how this motherland treats it’s own sons and daughters? Is that how our own mothers treat us? Can you imagine your family playing host to some visitors and your mom prepares all the beautiful, sumptuous and delectable buffet spread for the guest and the rest of the family members are relegated to hide at one corner eating that packet of infamous YOG DOG FOOD?
Pray, tell me, can you imagine after all the backbreaking hardwork helping out to spring clean the whole house and helping mummy prepare the food et al and ended up watching the guest helping themselves to the buffet spread while each and everyone of you, your brothers & sisters drool in front of your own packet of YOG DOG FOOD?
This is no family, I tell you. That is no way a mother treats her own children notwithstanding the social standing of the family.
Worried that the YOG Commitee would take advantage of this uproar about catering
to jack up the cost budget even more.
They would resort to anything to spend more of our money.
for $380+ million, the YOG organisers better spill the beans on what is spent, how money is spent & how they themselves help limit the total amount spent.
if not, i think alternative parties should make this a national issue & throw the ball into PAP court. this is just YOG, with PAP obsession with hosting big & grand international events, it will not take long to empty national reserves.
hmmm… maybe that’s why need more new citizens $$$? sunshine empire?
i thought Singapore Food industries the caterer was part of Temasek? Or is it one of Lky relative is director in it? I cant remember which is correct. Anyone comment?
anythinggie/companies with the golden word…SINGAPORE belon to leekinyou..PERIOD… i know because when i want to register singapore beggar soceity..it was disqualified by ROC..unless the president is leekingyou or mrs harrylee…
“i know because when i want to register singapore beggar soceity”
ROC die die will never approve your application because LKY said it before ‘there are no beggars in singapore’…but he forgot to mention there are many crooks, the cleverest are those who love to wear white…and for sure he knows this better than any one.
The volunteers are made to look like FOOLS now: they got food poisoning.
yogflog–
they are not volunteers, they are forced, even they have tickets, they venue are empty. the gov waste a lot of money to support themself.
