There is a very real and chilling possibility that Singaporeans will wake up on May 8, the day after election day, and find ourselves with 87 elected Members of Parliament (MPs) from the PAP, and none from the opposition.

If so, we will have regressed to the level of democracy seen more than thirty years ago. From independence in 1965 till 1981, the PAP controlled all the seats in parliament. Since independence, only a total of 5 non-PAP MPs have been elected to parliament. As a concerned 21-year old Singaporean, I fear that not having representation for people who disagree with government policies will lead to serious imbalances in our country, with irreparable consequences.

credit: ST

There is absolutely no chance that the PAP will lose power in a freak election result. Despite the online chatter, an overwhelming proportion of the population belongs to the “silent majority” and continues to support the PAP time after time. I applaud Mr Low Thia Khiang and Mr Chiam See Tong for leaving their SMCs to contest GRCs. But the stakes are high, and the time is ripe for PAP candidates to pick up Hougang and Potong Pasir. If Mr Low and Mr Chiam lose – and the opposition has always lost a GRC fight – come May 8, we will read in this newspaper that we will have no opposition MP in parliament for the next five years. We would have then done nothing but only succeeded in gagging ourselves, and killing our fledging democratic movement.

No one claims that our democracy is perfect. But if we continue to be apathetic and unwilling to give the opposition a chance, then be prepared to live for the next five years with no elected alternative voices in Parliament. My fellow Singaporeans, are you prepared for 87-0?

Has it occured to anyone that even if the opposition becomes the majority, the loser PAP MPs can still be appointed into key positions in civil service, to stop the new MPs from getting any change done? After all, LKY is still here to support them.

And 5 years later, when nothing gets done, the PAP blames the opposition-led parliament and wins back their majority. Woopie-doo!

As much as I fear that possibility, there is the consideration that the if WP wins Aljunied GRC (which I think there is a high possibility) PAP will be faced with losing 3 ministers. 3 MINISTERS! George Yeo will no longer be the Minister for Foreign Affaiers. He’ll end up at Tourism Board or something. Lim Hwee Hwa will have to look for another Office to work in. Zainul Anidin will have to be a senior in some other Tourism entity. PAP have a lot at stake there.

  3. Silent majority will soon learn a lesson

when the PAP gov makes another huge loss in investments by GIC and Temasek, if they fail to pick up a lesson from 2008′s fin tsunami.

When GIC and CPF bankrupt, foreigners sell their flats, and leave, Singaporeans want to sell flats but no buyers –become flat-rich on book but cash poor, more better yrs to come but never come. Elder Lee checks out, with tons of issues and questions unanswered and unaccounted for.

And constitution amended for PAP to stay in power permanently without GE, Unanimously passed in the 100% PAP controlled house.

If you remain silent, they ask for more –look, PM is getting 4 million pa.

PAP is taking advantage of you –silent majority.

    Wake up!

If this is a all-SMC war and no smearing and voters truly voted for them, I agree with what you say, otherwise traitors of Singapore please SHUT UP!

most expensive public housing which is affordable with 35yrs mortgage.

they get super bonus and you are lucky if you get same salary in real terms.

cannot get on public transport as you cannot bash as garang as others.

highest retirement scheme but cannot retire.

health care is so expensive that better die than sick.

    etc etc…

you made the choice. accept it.
cut your own corners. if FT can work at lower pay and longer hours, you can too.
when you work 14hrs a day 6days a week you wont spend much money. sunday can sleep whole day. it is enough, dont be choosy and dont complain.

If 87-0 really happens, I would feel quite sure the PAP had cheated. Especially with the kind of groundswell we have now.

I think we will get a handful of Oppo MPs into parliament this time. That’s good enough. It would be much harder to convince the people of PAP’s lies and smokescreens next time.

Because we have all been enlightened so much by the Oppo this time. There has been a political awakening among Singaporeans, thanks more to the Internet than to the work per se of the Oppo parties or their leaders. But with due respect to them, they now stand in a much stronger position to speak up for us. Even if none of them get into parliament.

What we should be dreading is not 87-0 but the resumption of the ruthless persecution and prosecution of the Oppo, with the possibility of ISA rearing its ugly head again.

MY VOTE IS FOR OPPO. WOO-HOO! WORKERS PARTY IS CONTESTING ALJUNIED!

  8. People have to be smart to know that no one is losing good ministers if opp party win. Who make the rule that good minister has to be sacrificed in order for opp party to win ? Isn’t minister begotten to people of Singapore not PAP or any party after all we are the one paying for their million dollars salary. PAP is the one to make the rule to hold Singapore hostages , question is why should we let them ? Exercise your citizens’ voice and might ! Rule is meant to broken especially kangaroo and oppressive rule. This can be changed. People should not mislead about that .

Once you vote out the PAP, you think the ministers will go fly kite ? Don’t they need to earn a living too ?

It will be a sad, and extremely dangerous situation if the alternatives party won ZERO seats despite a swing of 10% of votes against the PAP. That means a govt that has 100% of the seats with slightly more than 50% support from the voters. 5 years from now, another 5-6% swing against the PAP would really mean a complete change of power, wihtout a “learning” and “adptation” phase for the Alternatives.

Let’s hope that will not happen on 7th May.

After experiencing the “new PAP” and tracked its performance over the last 10 years, an old timer like me finally accepted that all the president’s men & including the president cannot justifty their selection based on their take home pay and no answers are forthcoming from the PAP
Now the real moral issue of the “new PAP” starts with their own people’s undeserving million dollars salaries…………
It took 10 years for me to feel the wrong; if most singaporeans are like me, then it may well be 87-0 again & again…

There will be no civil dis-order from the Pro PAP as their former leader will all be happy to take a break after earning so much salary. sorry I am dreaming

I appeal to you to please find whatever opportunity to speak to anyone you know, parents, colleagues, friends or even strangers. among them, there are ppl who just blindly vote for the PAP, without truly understand the implication of one party parliament. Many of them are not websavvy and easily brainwashed by the information from the mainstream media. Share with them why we need alternative voices in parliament, promises not kept by the PAP in the past term etc. Even if they still not convinced, at least the vote with their eyes wide open.
today more threats from the PAP and all quite unbelievable. I worried that our fellows voters get poisoned by the one sided news.
I have started speaking to as many ppl abt voting for alternative. will continue to do. I dont want 87-0 and hope at least 20 elected opposition in the house.

  18. We need to exercise our choice carefully. Ask ourselves deep in our heart if our country has been on the right track over the past 5-10 years. If you still think so, I have nothing more to say. That’s your choice.

Speak of track record. A Straits Times report said that our economy’s productivity growth was only 1% per year over the past 10 years. So, the 5-6% growth that we saw was almost entirely due to the influx of cheap foreign labour.

Not a record to be proud of. Meanwhile, our poor is getting more marginalised while public spaces are turning unbearably crowded. I dread to think what Singapore will be like in 10 years’ time.

I want to be able look at my son, and his kids, 10, 20, or 30 years later, and tell them that I’ve made a choice at this election, so that they would not be marginalised in a place they call home. As Mr Chen Show Mao said, how many five years do we have in our lives?

They could be arrested! However I tried to tell her that’s ridiculous, she refuses to believe. Her final advice, be careful. Singapore very sensitive about politics.

I am embarrassed to mention this. But I think this is the actual climate of fear that the PAP has maintain all these years. There are all these evergreen rumours. For example, your vote is not secret because of the serial number. You can be jailed for anything as long as someone complains. You talk politics only, you will get arrested, etc etc. And these rumours will preserve a large number of voters for the PAP.

To me, whether these rumours are real or not is irrelevant. If you are really concerned about them, simple, do away with the people that fueled this culture. Unfortunately, as like so many things, easier typed than done.

George Yeo is a smart man and he will live happily for many more good years. There are also many MPs who can take over the work of Foreign Minister, and George Yeo can volunteer his services to the country by advising whenever necessary. for that matter, even Jayakumar can be asked for advice as we were told that he did very well as our former Foreign Minister.

No man is indispensable whether to the PAP or to Singapore. Voters in Aljunied cannot keep George Yeo forever even if they love him dearly. We call upon all Aljunied residents to vote bravely for the WP. Be enshrined in history as our torchbearers for a new democratic Singapore, with freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, and justice and equality for all Singaporeans.

  26. The Fundamental problem is the People 30 April 2011

Why i say so. Feel free to debunk me:

    1. In the last 2 elections, people gave the Excuse that they support Opposition but too bad could not cast their votes. I can debunk this by saying, they could actually get those in the voting wards to vote for Opposition. But have they done so? Converting a PAP supporter to Opposition Supporter is as good as themselves voting for Opposition.

    2. The People could Question the numerous Boos Boos and Fiascos committed. Have they? If 50% of population start Questioning for answers, there will be great pressure to answer them. There will be more Apathetic, goondoo minded starting to sense something is not right. They may start to question as well. Have the People done so?

    3. How many have voted out of FEAR?

    4. How many have voted out of fear of being found out and losing the benefits they have enjoyed ?

    5. How many who drives Beemers, Mercs and live in Condos and bungalows DARED to vote FOR Oppos?

So, the Problem is the PEOPLE because many have voted for the Opposition but it was just short of some votes to win since the last 2 elections.

The problem of FEAR can be eliminated when the people do the right honorable thing. But have they?

Many non-political questions could be raised but were they raised by majority?

Singapore will continue to run because the Civil Service is not the Political party. Its there to serve whichever the ruling party of the day.

FEAR is already proven as Self-Instilled more so than its Real. This means, there are some real risks but most of the FEAR comes from our minds.

The People is Responsible for being the Voter who gave the mandate.

Hold yourselves Accountable this election and redeem yourselves.

    UnCut, Uncensored the Hard Truth

    Uncensored : The HARD TRUTH

I have a team of ministers under me.
Not all of them are new, some I inherit from the previous leader. The previous leader is still in my team as an advisor.
How ridiculous this is, how can I function with him hanging around waiting to fault me if I make a mistake.
To me I can’t wait to boot him out of this team. My dream.
However, in politics its complicated so I have to live with it.

To be frank with you, I prefer a fresh new team of ministers. These fresh virgin ministers would not have any bond with
previous master so I can be their first real virgin master. Why? Let me tell you why.

I am trying very hard to put together this hybrid team of young and old ministers to work together as a team. The problem is the older ministers are still very much attached to their previous master. To me, I am just their half master. Outwardly they show their respect
and say nice things to inflate me but actualy they can’t wait to tarnish me
    through and through.
    How do I know?

Thinking of it just make me boil !!!
Look eversince I took over as their leader, countless things has happened
that make me look like an idiot. You know how it feels to be a leader of a team
that make mistakes one after another, some are deliberate judging from the groundswell of unhappiness among locals. I have been thinking of giving them the boot but they make smart move, I can’t fault them for bringing lots of money into the kitty can I?
Bloodly hell, at my expense and the peoples’ expense. No wonder I am getting unpopular by the minute.

I tried to be nice, they want pay rise by the millions I went along with it thinking maybe this would make them worker harder and respect me even more.
You know deep down inside, the guilt of paying myself this insane salary makes me sick. I wasn’t brought up this way. Look my dad and mum were very prudent with money. That’s why I decided to freeze mine for the next 5 years.

Introspect, I should have stopped them, but its too late. Now it seem I am the master mind. How can I be so stupid I should have seem through their plot.

You know I have been thinking of how to get rid of these clowns so that I can function more effectively as a leader. It would look good for me as well as my father. These guys don’t even have an iota of respect for my old man trying ways to implicate him as well.
I can’t just fire them, I must have good reasons. You know these guys are damm smart when it comes to politicking.

I was hoping mummie could give me a helping hand, some sort of intuition, an idea or 2. I don’t know why but lately the word ELECTION ELECTION have been popping out in my mind. Maybe its election fever but I am already used to that. Can’t be. Can’t be.

Wait a second, election is a time when people gets to vote for their MPs and MP ministers. Its either you get voted in or you get booted out. That’s it. Booted oh.. sorry I meant voted out by the people. It would look good on me if these clowns get voted out by the people.
I don’t have to dirty my hands. Great!

Ok. lets see. If I increase a few seats, reduce some sizes and do abit of adjustment here and there, throw in some smoke for the clowns that should work out pretty well. But how can I guarantee it. That previous master must go I can’t endure it anymore..arrgghhh
SIR.. SIR… are you talking to yourself? are you alright??
YES YES…. I am ok… just bare with me… I am in the middle of a major breakthrough in my career so please bare with me.

Now.. where am I.. oh. yes that previous monster… how to get rid of this bug… ya a weak link… I must find a weak link someone the voters dislike and is also annoying. But where to find? It must be strictly confidential and private… nobody should know… TOP secret X-Files.
hmm.. I think I know who this private person can be. Just nice .. my personal assistant.. have to rope him in…
But his wife is not that type… hmmm… some acting lessons on short notice.. a few candid pictures ready to leak.. when time is right. That should worked out nice… genuis…

    What about those politicking clowns???
Judging from the feedback I get from my network, they are very unpopular with the voters right now…me included thanks to the bloody clowns… I guess they stand a fifty-fifty chance of being voted..
local voters… arrrggh… when are they going to read between the lines..
I must sent some clear signal to the voters and opposition parties not too directly but easy to discern.
This calls for some delicate works… got to sound out those opposition parties privately…
ask them to standby some heavy weighs candidates as well to ensure those clowns don’t stand a chance.

Come to think it, its better to work with those opposition parties then these politicking clowns. At least I get better respect from the opposition and they have no problems with salary. clear my name
and conscience once and for all.

Finally the clear signal for the voters… this is a tough one…
Got it… I am going to annouce in the press and through the media …
NO BY-ELECTION… must repeat a few times for voters to get the hint…
Then bring it up again just before voting … dammm it.. i forgot the cooling off period … damm dammm damm
never mind.. just bring it up during rally, inform the press to repeat it.
Repeat this a few more times.. and the voters should get it.
Hope the voters are not that daft this time.
Got to sealed up those back doors real tight so those politicking clowns have not choice but to quit.

Let me reassure the writer that it will not be 87-0 on 7 May. The PAP has steadily dropped its percentage of the popular vote from election to election. At the last election it was hovering at just under 60% – the groundswell of support for the alternate parties is quite apparent. Looking at all online media and all anti-govt sentiment expressed , should this all be translated to votes at the ballot box (and that is the critical part), a probable outcome would be at least 1 GRC and 4 SMCs to fall to the opposition making the number of opposition members in parliament no less than 10. Having said all of that Sporeans are also known to “chicken out” and lack the b—s to change anything especially if their comfortable life was going to be changed.
LKY said in his Hard Truths interview that he did not really worry about the 15 to 20% of voters from the lower socio-economic strata voting for the opposition as he was happy that the 80 to 85% of the higher social strata would vote for the govt as they were the main beneficiaries of the govt’s policies. Lets hope in this GE that enough voters from the higher social strata vote for the opposition.
Last but not least, even if Spore wakes up on 7 May and find that the opposition parties have a majority and can form govt, there need not be panic. The govt may get kicked out but the public service is still there. The four pillars of the public service ie health, education, transport and communications will still operate as usual. Anyone who truly believes that govt ministers, and not bureacrats, are the ones who keep the country running day to day should seriously go and have their head examined!!!!

Trouble is, ONE person had made our life so fearful after what he DID to the dis-senting voices and opposition and used our courts to “KILL” the person’s(ALL HUMANS ARE FREE SPIRITED) spirit and will to live. So, today, we have a nation of young that has no fight, no challenge, no imagination and that ONE person and his stooges claim, “our young must be apathetic to politics”, what a contradiction.

Trouble is the sing dollar appreciate too fast and furious. Is it good for us, you better think. Hot flow of money into any economy, closed or open, is not good as it destabilize all things.

Our trade with malaysia is more on, concrete, sand, granite, and granite sand and compared to food, chicken, vege, eggs, pork, its this trade of building materials, that brings in the bacon for the gov, in selling of land, condo cost and fees of all kinds to gov coffers. This trade is larger than the food cost all singaporeans consumed DAILY, since day one, look at HDB from 1973 onwards.

The nation has lost christmas island because of some despot,LYH, imagine if we have christmas island, our army, navy and air force cost can be saved in the billions, instead of going to australia, new zealand, taiwan, south africa for training.

    LIKE SOMEONE SAID.
“BUT, DO WE REALLY NEED AN ARMY IN THE 21ST CENTURY, WHY NOT HAVE A FEW A BOMBS AND LET THAT BE A DETERRENCE”

DOES ANYONE WIN A WAR IN THE 21ST CENTURY, ONLY THE DESPOTS WOULD WANT TO GO TO WAR IN THE 21ST CENTURY.

Imagine if christmas island is with us, our fishery can be develop, farming of all kinds can have huge potential, and recreation too. One can imagine the kind of things one can create there.

But then, we have voted in duds, with no imagination and that cost us aplenty. We have many malaysians chinese and indians and they say, “LKY is our saviour, he’s very good”, and these people have been taking away our jobs and depressing our wages, creating inflation of all kinds, but never wanting to take up citizenship, why, is the jobs not good enough for your children, the ones you have taken away from locals, the HDB that you have stayed, 10-20 years, not good enough for your retirement, the buses, mrt ????

As if this ONE person wants to show or prove to Mahathir, “look, we have created jobs and save your economy”, “your unemployment data figures IS LOW DUE TO US giving jobs to 600,000 malaysians”

It’s this ONE person that SAID, singaporeans are difficult, daft, has no spike, not hungry. This ONE person looks at us, all singaporeans as a BARRIER to his GLORY.

Now, do you want to give him your vote ??

    The Battle of Okehazama

441 years ago, it was the era of battles in Japan. There were many feudal lords who aimed to rule Japan. The Hojo family controlled the Kanto area (now around Tokyo), the Uesugi family ruled Echigo (around Niigata), the Takeda family in Kai (around Yamanashi), the Imagawa family in Totomi and Mikawa (around Shizuoka and Aichi), and the Oda family in Owari (around Nagoya). These lords had a great ambition to expand their own land and to get greater power.

On May 12, 1560, Imagawa Yoshimoto left Sunpu (Shizuoka) with 25,000 soldiers to go to Kyoto (the capital at that time).
On May 17, they arrived at the Kutsukake Castle which was near Okehazama (in Toyoake).

On the other hand, Oda Nobunaga left the Kiyosu Castle early in the morning on May 19. He left his castle with only 200 soldiers. On the way to Okehazama (the battlefield) he dropped into the Atsuta Shrine to pray for victory. The number of soldiers had increased to around 1,000 at that time. When they reached Okehazama at noon, no less than 3,000 soldiers followed Nobunaga. On that day, Yoshimoto and his men took a rest and ate lunch at Okehazama. While Yoshimoto listened to reports of the battle situation, it suddenly began to shower, causing confusion among Yoshimoto’s troops. Nobunaga was very lucky, for because of this shower, his troops were able to easily attack and defeat Yoshimoto’s force. Hattori Koheita, one of Nobunaga’s men, pierced Yoshimoto with a spear, and Mori Shinsuke, also one of Nobunaga’s men, killed Yoshimoto. It took Nobunaga only 2 hours to get the victory.
2,500 men of Yoshimoto’s and 830 men of Nobunaga’s were killed in this battle.

This Okehazama Battle became an epoch-making event in the history of Japan. By this victory, Nobunaga established the base of Japan’s unification. Thereafter, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu succeeded him, and with Ieyasu, started the 300-year-long Tokugawa Shogunate.

it is technically possible because of the grc and first past the post system. This means that if the PAP gets 50.1% of the votes in each constituency, it gets all 87 seats. leave nothing to chance.

Its sad to hear that some youths still feel obligated to vote for PAP because among reasons given – im under mendaki loan, i’m getting a BTO flat soon etc and for them, the way out is to please PAP and vote for them.

If you do a check on these youths, i dare say that they are ignorant and politically disconnected from the mainstream news and social media news. However on the other hand, those who are active in attending rallies and keeping in touch with news, they are more bold to think what’s in store for them should they vote the wrong/right party to be the leader.

Come 8th May I too am worried that we will have a 87-0. Then for the next 5 years we will have a even more arrogant, heavy handed and uncaring govt. who will not have our interest at heart. So true blue Singaporeans please help the Opp and give them your vote.We need a strong alternative voice to represent us.
