Hi,

I have lived in Hougang for almost 20 years. I have been through 3 elections and voted in 2 of them. In these years, I have seen Low Thia Khiang countless of times. He can be seen at coffee shops and the market (before HDB torn it down). Although he has a very nice office at Block 701, he make it a point to come to Block 310 every Wednesday for the Meet the People session in the heart of the estate.

Eric Low from PAP has been in Hougang for two terms, yet I have never seen him before. It angers me that Eric Low calls Hougang a slum.  While Hougang did not receive government funding for upgrades, Low Thia Khiang did a very good job maintaining the estate with the limited resources he has. He put in Fitness Corners, Senior Citizen Corners, Street Soccer enclosure, covered walkways, ramps etc.

I have done a quick walk around Hougang and took some photos of the place. I hope you can help publish the photos to prove that Hougang is not a slum.

CK

Although I do not live in Hougang, I have many ex-colleagues who do. They have been living in Hougang for years and love it. I have seen Hougang and it is no slum as ELow terms it.

“Bitter” and “Sour” are two words that resonate at his loss of Hougang.

“Guys, please check out my estate at Bedok South. I am new to this neighbourhood and thinking that this being in the PAP ward, should have some standards.”

    @Merci Cote Wilson,

Yes parts of Bedok look more like a slum than Hougang. Some parts of Bedok is under Aljunied GRC.

Very old, poorly maintained, dirty shabby. Problem is these estates are mostly old people and they don’t complain as much as the younger one.

Before PAP accuse opposition, they should look in their own backyard first. So shabby!

  3. LKY do estate mgt? 5 May 2011

How dare this Eric Low loser call his own constituency a slum. sore loser and a traitor of singaporeans.

no credibility still dare to make noise.

all this talk by PAP about they being good estate mgrs are all bullshit. do you really think LKY, GCT, LHL actually go down to do estate mgmt. what a joke. lky is flying around being treated as VIP at the expense of taxpapers on a diplomatically-speaking basis. Does MM even have a job description? reality, he has no performance indicators, no workload, no responsibility.

Minister Mah is the Minister in Charge. If he sees a slum in Singapore and do not do anything about it,then he is not proud of singapore. Then why he does not separate Singapore into 2 independent states. One run by PAP and the other by others

  8. Why are the "servants" being paid salary equivalent of a Master?? 5 May 2011

Tampines under Mah Bow Tan and yet a few month’s ago, The Straits Times reported that a huge slab of concrete fell off above someone’s window. The home owner told the reporter that he called the Town Council but town council did NOTHING.

Luckily nobody was hurt when the concrete fell. So is this world class housing in Mah Bow Tan’s backyard/constituency? Really no shame, still dare to smear and create false impression about other party’s constituency.

I thought all the while he was the ‘unofficial’ keeper of the estate representing PAP. And how did he allow Hougang to be turned into a slum ?

Isn’t he slapping his own face to say that Hougang is a slum ?

It only shows the evil and selfish side of him, waiting so eagerly to claim his prized reward from PAP should he wins the election, even at the expense of calling Hougang a slum.

Shouldn’t Hougang voters beware of such opportunistic politicians ?

after reading so many comments, i now realize that the opposition CAN do a better job actually. and the men in white claim they have no track record. my used to be walkover grc is finally being contested, it’s so obvious to see who should and is gonna win. apparently our beloved dpm has honoured himself by assuming that after the GE, he will be the guest of honour of a family day in Bishan East. Let’s see who will honour you. Mas Selamat?

I’m not a resident of Hougang, but given the pictures, i’ve seen worse. See Jurong GRC or even West Coast GRC.

I just visit HG Ave 5 today, and yes, I had the same question, is it a slum??? NO!! Yes, it is old but it gives me the warmth which makes me think back on my childhood life, where life is in its early 80s. I would be glad to be in an environment where true care and concern is abundant for everyone. Remember how our old shopkeepers would secretly report to our mothers if we buy sweets too often? Remember that as a child we get introduced and remembered as almost everyone else in the market? Remember that as a child, we used to get away with buying food without paying for it because stall owners know and trust that our mums will pay for it the next day?
HG gives me that feeling… I dunno it is real, for I dun stay there. But from what you guys are writing, then yes! Our country is lacking in community spirit, in compassion, in time just to say hi to our neighbours…we were too driven by economic factors that we forgot to stop and smell the roses. Sorry to say this but I stay in my old premises for 10 years and I barely spoke to my next door neighbour for more than 10 times. I think it is time to bring the HG spirit to all over Singapore. The kampong spirit.
