Dr Tan Cheng Bock

“Dear friends, I am honoured to be notified by the election department that I have been approved to receive my COE.This is the moment we have all been waiting for. From now till nomination day we will go full steam in our preparation. We are ready.”

Mr Tan Jee Say

“I would like to thank the Presidential Elections Committee for approving my eligibility for the Certificate of Eligibility to contest the Presidential Election. I also thank my friends and supporters for helping me in the last few weeks of preparations and I look forward to their continued support in the weeks ahead as our campaign steps up. I also take this opportunity to congratulate Dr Tony Tan, Dr Tan Cheng Bock and Mr Tan Kin Lian for obtaining their Certificates of Eligibility and I look forward to a dignified contest with them.”

Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam

“I am deeply honoured to be granted the Certificate of Eligibility to contest the coming Presidential Election. The Office of the President is the highest office in our nation. I expect there to be a vigorous exchange of views during the campaign, with all Singaporeans participating in the discussion. At the same time, I hope that the campaign will be carried out with decorum and in a manner befitting the Office of President.”

Mr Tan Kin Lian

“I am pleased that the Presidential Election Committee has granted me the Certificate of Eligibility. From now on, all arrangements will proceed as planned, leading up to Nomination Day. At this juncture, I wish to assure the public and all concerned that my campaign will be run in a clean and dignified manner, as befitting the status of the office.”

It doesn’t help the candidates’ cause to have 3 candidates versus Tony Tan who probably has about 50% of the votes from diehard PAP supporters. if the three good Tans are serious about doing what is right for the people, then the weakest candidates should withdraw. Hope they will self reflect on this and not let ego and face stand in the way.

The weakest is probably TKL.But knowing his personality, don’t think he’ll ever back out. Just hope that people who used to support him will swing votes to TJS. While TCB has 2 sets of supporters, some proPAP and some pro Oppo. Hope he will help split TT’s vote. Actually I am happy with either TCB or TJS.

In many ways Dr Tony Tan is the senior of PM Lee Hsien Loong. It stands to reason, according to the reasoning of the Law Minister that Dr Tan will be the President who will best have the PM’s ear. So when Dr Tan is elected as president, we the citizens of Singapore have actually strengthened the grip of the PAP in this country. And you will expect that when they bring in more foreigners, increase their own salaries, harden the Law against phony defamation charges, extend the scope of the ISA etc, the President Dr Tony Tan will resonate as a fine tuned echo-chamber.

Listening to the speakers tonight on TV about the powers of the elected president leads me to the conclusion that he has no powers at all but is a true extension of the will of the Cabinet. He the President is a lame duck and lacks the freewill and free speach of even the ordinary citizenry. The PAP is about to foist an expensive puppet on us ironically to maintain the prevalent state institutions supporting the culture of fear.

the endorsements on Dr Tony Tan somehow does have similiarities to th at CaseTrust sticker at private school entrance.

sometimes, endorsements are backed up by nothing but hot air. when the hot air vanishes, it may be too late.

TT’s got endorsed based on comparison made on paper, but the Presidential candidate cannot be judged based on spec sheet alone.

unless there are people who choose a spouse based purely on stats & personal data. i am not talking about scam marriages hor.

Tan Cheng Bock- has proven track record of political service
Tony Tan – an architect of PAP’s discredited elitist policies Tan Jee Say – has lost in GE2011, with link to Chee SJ, can’t see him getting access to secret Cabinet papers!
Tan Kin Lian – weakest of the lot, poor diction, neither here nor there

    Ladies & Gentlemen,

Who’s the most handsome and appealing man? We all know that the President is a dummy that has no power, but he can bark. So choose the best looking, ferocious barking dummy.

Definitely not Phony Tony; he’s too soft spoken, and mild mannered. Cannot bark at all. Besides, center-parting, Tancho or Brylcreem belongs to the 70s era.

Kin Lian has potential, but women d’ont trust his roving eye.

That leaves only Doc and Tan Jee Say. Of the two, Tan Jee Say is undoubtedly rougher more uncouth and has the louder bark. Having Chee Soon Juan as his spiritual mentor guarantees he will not only bark, but may even try biting. So, it’s Tan Jee Say for moi

A very interesting and unpredictable race!

    Tony Tan
On paper most qualified and experienced but also most linked with the PAP establishment.

    Tan Cheng Bock
Very well linked to the grassroots, can connect with the heartland but also capable of being cerebral when needed.

    Tan Kin Lian
Most neutral and seems to have links/support from multiple opposition parties (Rallied for SDP at GE2011 + his advisers include members of the NSP and WP).

    Tan Jee Say
Most non-PAP but strongly connected with SDP and harbours some slightly extreme views.

A very difficult choice. If I had to choose, my vote would go to TAN CHENG BOCK. He seems to be the best of both worlds, truly independent and impartial plus not afraid to speak his mind while at the same time not overly extreme and unlikely to use the office to advance his own political agenda. He really knows how to connect with ordinary Singaporeans and at the same time his experience/credentials are impressive.

I actually started out supporting Tan Jee Say but his views can sometimes be a bit too extreme. I am afraid he is pursuing the office for the wrong reasons and will try to overly politicise everything. His links to Chee Soon Juan and SDP are also somewhat concerning.

To be fair and honest here. I believe any of the 3 independent Tan (TCB, TKL or TSJ) wins, the 3 is a winner. As long as Tony Tan is out of our limelight and get kick in the butt for being PAP stooge, the other 3 tans have no regret if voters let any of them enter Istana. I already see them supporting each other spiritually.

Dr Tony Tan should give others a chance to earn $4 million. If he really want to protect Singapore from dark clouds, he should become a US citizen and run for US President. He is running for the wrong office.

I hope TCB lives up to his reputation and wack the PAP TT hard in the polls by taking the old hard core PAP supporters’ votes.

  21. Tan Cheng Bock - The People's President 12 August 2011

I would vote for Tan Cheng Bock.

He’s the most independent of the 4 Tans, really know how to speak his mind. I’ve met him several times and met TKL and TJS once each also. TCB is really the easiest person to get along with, very easy to talk to him and he really seems very genuine. TKL and TJS both seemed more interested in shaking hand and posing for photo than getting to know more about you.

Also, I want TJS to run for GE in 2016. I am SDP supporter and would like to ‘preserve’ him for Parliament rather than waste his talent on EP. GE2016 is more important the PE2011, and SDP will stand much better chance with TJS, Vincent and Chee SJ.

After the TV show featuring what the president can do and cannot do, I am really doubtful that he can improve anything in the lives of Singaporeans. Whoever is elected, whether it is Tony Tan or one of the other Tans, will be forced by Law to say what the Ruling Party wishes him to say. And the Law Minister does not mince words when he suggested that a judge in Court can step in to decide what the president can say, have said and should say. In other words, the Ruling Party will make sure that nothing is uttered by the President which is not the things that they themselves would have uttered and they would pursue him legally if he crosses the line. This Government is trigger happy when it comes to the Courts because that is the arena where many stalwarts have met their doom, I mean loss of everything they own. So we are about to install a President who must be a lame duck for him to co-exist with the Ruling Party. Is such a president worth the astronomical sums we must pay out to upkeep him? I do not understand why non of the speakers in the TV talk show on the president ask the question why do we need a President at all, especially if he can operate only on such narrow terms. The scenario of a president safeguarding the reserves is farcical considering that the president has to have the behaviour of a lap dog if he is to survive in the job. I am sure that there are other methods to safeguard the state reserves that do not require the interposition of a deadweight.

So why have a President at all?

    Dear Fellow Singaporeans

In the interest of transparency and in the spirit of being the voice of conscience,
this to correct the false impression that is conveyed in the Sunday Times article about tjs.

Tjs has no moral righteousness, compass or anchor and blows where the winds of opportunity takes him. He quit as PPS when it became apparent that he would not become perm sec. Tjs is driven by greed and selfishness.

When Morgan Grenfell came knocking, tjs jumped at the chance. He promised to bring in much monies from the Malaysian conglomerates which he came into contact with during his tenure at MTI. His results at Morgan Grenfell speak for themselves, tjs did not deliver the monies and his peers soon found that he was a light weight load of hot air.

Tjs had a contributory role in Peregrine’s demise. He did not dispense proper advise that the investment into an Indonesian concern was not viable. Tjs, the person at the site did not do proper due deligence.

At AIB Govett, it was reported that his strength was in policymaking. This firm collapsed whilst others survived, obviously tjs’s policies were wrong. This forebodes poorly on the potential for tjs to be EP as at every employment stop he has demonstrated poor judgement. Translate this into safeguarding our nation’s reserves and it will result in disastrous consequences.

Tjs’s next stops at Standard Chartered Bank and Hi Green also empty of significant contributions.

His claim to be ‘not a lavish man’ is not true. In tjs ‘high flying’ years, tjs openly boasted that his income tax contributions were higher than an average man’s annual income. Tjs aspired to the lifestyle of this successful PAP friends and his banking colleagues.  Tjs had his fair share of thoughts about redeveloping  his Frankel Avenue house into a mansion.

It is obvious that tjs squandered his wealth on ill conceived and dubious ventures in his empty years. If tjs had prudently invested his wealth, he would be fairly well off. This can be verified by any banker.

2006 till present, tjs was unemployable as by that time the banking industry had seen tjs for what he was, no substance and only hot air.

Let the people exam tjs’s empty years for themselves. And these were indeed empty as he was trying to chase his ‘China make money’ dream backed up by casual connections made when he accompanied government officials in China state visits.

There was the attempt at marketing originated in China breast enhancement drug treatments in Singapore.

His attempt to provide training of bank personnel also failed as tjs could not deliver what he promised.

There is also erroneous reporting when it was reported that Tjs’s wife was an investment banker.  This is inaccurate. Pls verify which investment bank she was employed under.  In fact she abused her position as when Mrs tjs was with their 4th child, NTUC Income would not grant her paid maternity leave so she took unpaid leave but traded on her information from the NTUC Income equity positions she managed to make money for herself. In what ever manner one looks at this, this is a conflict of interest.

Tjs’s selective use of reality makes him dangerous to Singapore.

Reporting tjs an independent candidate is also very wrong.  He was brought up through the PAP system and for a time worked within the system when he was PPS to DPM GOH. In truth, tjs is a rogue PAP ronion setting out on his own agenda to revenge the wrong that he perceives the PAP has done to him under the disguise of public interest.

Tjs cannot claim to be a people’s man and have the Singaporeans’ interest at heart. For those who know tjs, tjs thinks highly of himself, is full of himself, highly opinionated, talks down to people. Tjs can no way be representative of Singapore’s President.

I feel that tjs does not have our nation’s interest at heart; tjs has an axe to grind with the PAP because he is disgruntled that his dreams of higher government office was not realized.

This is very dangerous and a threat to our country’s stability and because of this I feel strongly that when reporting on tjs the truth must be correctly reported.

    Best regards.
