We welcome Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak’s announcement that his government would repeal the Internal Security Act (ISA) and the Emergency Ordinance. He said the changes are aimed at “having a modern, mature and functioning democracy which will continue to preserve public order, ensure greater civil liberties and maintain racial harmony.” We look forward to the Malaysian Prime Minister fulfilling his promise to his people.
Singapore inherited the ISA from Malaysia. This law has been in existence for more than half a century and its impact on society is both crippling and pernicious. Its life began soon after the Second World War as the Emergency Regulations in 1948 when the British used it to put down strong anti-colonial movements. In 1955, the Preservation of Public Security Ordinance incorporating the Emergency Regulations was passed. When Singapore joined Malaysia in 1963, the Federation of Malaya’s Internal Security Act 1960 became part of our law.
The Ministry of Home Affairs claims that:
“ … A person arrested under the ISA in Singapore may be held in custody for up to 30 days after which an Order of Detention or Restriction Order must be issued or else the person must be released unconditionally.
In Malaysia, the period of custody is up to 60 days…” (ST 17.9.2011).
This comparison is irrelevant because political detainees in Singapore have been imprisoned for periods which far exceed those in Malaysia. Dr Chia Thye Poh was imprisoned for 26 years. Dr Lim Hock Siew was imprisoned for 20 years. Mr Lee Tee Tong was imprisoned for 18 years and Dr Poh Soo Kai and Inche Said Zahari for 17 years.
The Ministry further claims that the Advisory Board is a safeguard against abuse under the ISA.
The protection accorded by the Advisory Board is spurious, if not a farce. Several of us have appeared before such a board and can confirm that the board did not examine witnesses and evidence against the detainee. In 1987, appearances before the board lasted not more than a few minutes each. Furthermore, detainees were discouraged from appearing before the board by ISD officers. Many were advised that appearing before the board would jeopardise their chances of early release.
Singapore has many existing laws that will deal with acts of terrorism. We have the Penal Code, the Sedition Act, Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act, Vandalism Act and after 9/11, the Terrorism (Suppression of Bombings) Act and the Terrorism (Suppression of Financing) Act. These laws provide severe punishments which include death, life imprisonment and caning.
In 1991, then Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said, “Singapore will seriously consider abolishing the Internal Security Act if Malaysia were to do so”. He made this response to seven Malaysian journalists in his office when asked why the ISA was still needed in Singapore even though the Communist Party of Malaya no longer posed a threat. (ST 3.2.1991.) Now that Malaysia is repealing the ISA, we call upon PM Lee Hsien Loong to translate his 1991 statement into reality and keep in step with the aspirations of our people for a mature and functioning democracy. Indefinite detention without trial is an affront to the human rights of citizens and an assault on our justice system.

When I was very young, I met up with one of the political detainee. This person told me that torture tactics like turning the air con until very it’s freezing, pouring water over this person and wait until the water on the clothes dries up in the aircon room before this person is being let out.
I did not believe this person at that time. I regret now.
You can keep ISA if and only if proper legislations to prevent abuse are introduced.
Does all these detained for years know WHO are the ones involved in DECIDING to lock them up WITHOUT TRIAL, and may i question is there evidence ?
Isa is detention without trial. That is in itself an abuse.

Indeed there was no proper legislation but over the years, professional and decent executives in developed Western countries work on it to improve on the system. Malaysia has achieved economic growth for as many years as Singapore albeit by smaller percentges…but despite which they now have higher domestic purchasing power than us…meaning distribution of wealth is fairer.
And now they are repealing the ISA thus fostering respect for civil soceity, democracy and political freedom.
Will Singapore follow suit or retain this archaic oppressive Act on the face of eroding popularity of the PAP regime, as an insurance for its continued survival in government.

And others had their explosives hidden under their burqas, the complete islamic cover-all for women.

How ISD abused the citizens using ISA is beyond our personal comprehension, but we try to forgive and move on if possible within ourselves. PAP must repent and others must forgive them too. we are humanised Singaporeans afterall.
In suing political rivals with civil libel suit, leaders insisted formaland unequivocal apologies from the unfairly maligned political rivals before securing the millions as damages.
Citizens are often oppressed by the so-called laws and regulations which are tweaked to serve the leaders’ own ease and convenience and hidden political agendas.
If there is no true apologies for the mistakes made in detaining political rivals for their own purpose, people should not forgive them.
People also may rise up from their graves and refuse to accept unconscienable and immoral acts of repressions.
WHY PROPHET MOHAMMED (PBBUH) WANTED ALL THOSE KHAWARIJ KILLED?
I empathisze with the sufferings that those ISA detainees had gone through, as I too had suffered grievously, but in different ways. Unfortunately, I still think we need the ISA, though it has to be reviewed and reformed to be more specific for really dangerous people like islamic terrorists (or any terrorists) that threaten Singapore. But we have to await the form that Malaysian PM Najib’s revamped ISA will take. Here is my reason why I have grown cold to the idea of scrapping totally our ISA.
Last month August 2011, we learned that Afghan President Hamid Karzai had to plead with local imams and Afghan Muslims to stop putting bombs in their turbans after three separate assassinations using bombs hidden in their islamic turbans took place. Yet the Great Muslim Ummah all over the world kept so quiet like a mouse when this happened. Why?

The assassination of Mr Rabbani is a major blow to President Karzai’s control of the peace process as well as for the Tajik Islamic community. Rabbani was widely acceptd by Afghans, thanks to his personal charisma and track record as a jihadi leader of a powerful mujahideen party fighting the Soviet occupation.
Mr Rabanni was invited by Mr Karzai last year to head the High Council for Peace, which is tasked with negotiating with the Talibans. But he was fiercely opposed to the Talebans. However, he wanted to be always a true Muslim and he understood that ISLAM always means peace, so he was in favour of peace and reconciliation with the Talebans whose strongholds are mainly in the south of the country.
Because this vile and extremely cunning ‘holy’ warrior of islam was brought in by Rabbani’s ‘trusted’ emissary, he (Estamullah) was not searched as a sign of trust. So he slipped through very tight security with his explosive well hidden in his turban. Talebans spokesman claimed responsibility for the suicide killing as they sought to eliminate all moderate forces to hijack the political process needed to regain their absolute power.
As they did for the legendary Tajik leader Ahmed Shah Massoud 10 years ago (with Arabs posing as journalists), the assassins in Rabbani’s killing worked with those in the Peace Council for many months and stayed in the guest house used by the Peace Council to gain trust and lower the guards of their targets by pretending to send peace emissaries, or pretending to seek their/his wise counsel.
Unfortunately, Mr Rabbani and his colleagues fell for their ruse as he was a grave danger to the Talebans because of his great spiritual appeal to the Afghans who despise the cruel and obscurantist interpretation of Islamic faith by those modern-day Khawarij and their ilk (i.e. the Talebans, the alQaedans and their Saudi backers). So the latter have been very determined to try killing all moderate Afghan Muslim leaders and all high-ranking officials by any means and any way possible.
Rabbani’s murder sent the clearest signal that the Talebans see little room for accommodation and seek nothing less than total absolute power needed to put again all Afghan Muslims under allah’s version of islam, but not under the ISLAM of ALLAH, so that their women and girls can, among other things, be put under the control of allah’s cruel, nonsensical and antiquated shariah laws to be raped, brutalised and ill-treated and then denied their basic human rights and education. In this way, their women/girls can be perpetually covered up in their cover-all burqas; will have to stay at home in sexual servitude to their husbands, and to function as their husbands’ housemaids and baby factories for replenishing the mindless foot-soldiers their allah needs for his twisted jihads against humanity.
That was the reason why Prophet Mohamed (pbbuh) wanted the Khawarij killed as he could foresee that they posed grave threats to the lives and well-being of true Muslims and all Singaporeans, as their short-range Islam could not go beyond their throats. But I feel these descendants of the Khawarij and people of their ilk, if they could, be jailed without trial under tough ISA laws, unless they have committed wilful murders, so must be executed.
Here is the evidence from the Hadith (holy book in Islam) to show why Prophet Mohammed (pbbuh) wanted the Khawarij and their ilk killed, as they pose existential threats to Singapore too.

ISA MUST NEVER BE TOTALLY ABOLISHED
Non-Muslims will always refuse to believe what those wicked followers in allah’s islam are trying so hard to project to us: that ISLAM means bombs, guns, assassinations, backwardness and mass-slaughters of innocent Muslims by allah’s jihadists for his false promises to them of eternally free sex with voluptuous paradise virgins, unless of course if they tell us, that is islam. Then we have to agree, as we have agreed with MM Lee for allegedly saying to Senator Hilary Clinto in 2005 that “islam is a venomous religion.”
Fortunately, Singapore has tough ISA laws which must therefore never be totally scrapped. Most important of all, we have wise, caring and rational Muslim leaders who want our Muslims to worship only ALLAH, and not allah. Read what energetic followers of allah are doing elsewhere in Indonesia and Somalia, for example:
Teacher of a madrassah (islamic school) in Indonesia was killed on 12/7/2011 when a bomb detonated prematurely while he was demonstrating to students how to make explosives, with the intention of using them to kill Indonesian Muslim police officers for hunting down their jihadists (upside-down islamic holy warriors). Local media had reported he was a former bomb trainee in the Philippines region of Mindanao.
He was also the treasurer of the madrassah where he taught students how to make bombs to kill innocent people for their allah’s holy wars, which often ended up killing mainly innocent Muslims and maiming for life many more. But they don’t care—just want to kill and slaughter for allah’s false promises to them of eternally free sex with paradise virgins!
Last year, one member of the school was arrested for funding the militant training camp in Aceh. In late June 2011, a 16 year student there was also arrested for stabbing a Muslim police officer to death.
This time, police had to negotiate with residents, students and teachers there to allow them to enter the location to investigate the explosion, while 4 security platoons surrounded the complex. They prevented police from entering to gather evidences and look for unexploded bombs hidden there. (ST 13/7/2011, p A17)
