A TOC reader has filed a report against an SAF personnel under the Sedition Act this afternoon.
At 5:17pm, TOC received an email from a TOC reader to Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Dr Maliki Osman against a certain Christian Eliab Ratnam, who is with the SAF Music and Drama Company for a posting on his Facebook wall.
The posting contains pictures of the Israel flag as well as a small poster on which contains strong anti-Islamic sentiments. (see below. We have blanked out certain words in the poster)
The email also contains another screen capture showing that Mr Ratnam has ‘liked’ the Facebook page of the Jewish Tea Party of Israel.
The TOC reader claimed that he has reported Mr Ratnam for sedition under the Sedition Act, Chapter 290. The report number is G/20111118/2113. The TOC reader also wrote:
In addition, in light of the recent Jason Neo inflammatory racist case, as a concerned member of the society, I believe that such individuals threated the very existance of our multi-racial fabric which has been developed and painstakingly harnessed over the years and such bigots could destroy all efforts in the blink of an eye. I espouse that such individuals be brought to justice and face the full extent of the law.
The email was also sent to Minister for Defense Dr Ng Eng Hen as well as the Straits Time Forum.
TOC has written to Mindef and the Ministry of Home Affairs for further clarifications.

Using ‘SAF personnel’ is very accurate despite many NSFs feeling they are forced into the SAF without choice. Good choice of words, TOC.

People often regard democracy and free speech as one and the same. However, what if a majority decide to shut the minority up through democratic means? We must be careful to avoid any tyranny of the majority. It’ll be democratic, certainly, but not very free…

If LKY has indeed described Islam as a “venomous” religion, will he be investigated by the relevant MHA department for an offence under the Sedition Act?
This SAF personnel has said in his facebook that he agreed with what LKY said. He obviously is being investigated for the same act. Will there be rule of law? Will the rule of law mean same rule being applied to all?
Even if LKY has indeed described Islam as a “venonmous” religion, he has committed no offence, morally or legally. He has exercised his right guaranteed under the UN Declaration of Human Rights. This is the freedom of conscience. The freedom to think independently. The right to your own conviction. This is the same intellectual freedom that Socrates exercised when he offended the traditionalists and was sentenced to death. LKY spoke those words privately and therefore cannot be accused of intending to offend or cause social tension.
If LKY is entitled to plead protection of freedom of citizens to speak what he wants to say about Islam and not be charged for sedition, then Christian Eliab Ratnam too should be given the same protection under the UN Human Right Convention who has clarified he speaks with conscience not against Islam as such but freedom of belief with conviction.
The question is will MHA dare to rule on this protection from prosecution for speaking up with conscience or conviction.
im not quite sure if lky actually spoke those words privately? last i heard, he denounced it in a book. wasn’t his opinion of Islam as venomous a “hard truth to keep singapore going.”
