the following is a media release by ACRES:

This Saturday (25 February) will see the largest and most diverse local animal protection event held in the history of Singapore.

Organised by ACRES, Chong Pang Division, Chong Pang YEC, NUS PEACE and Young NTUC, and supported by the PAP Community Foundation, the event gives everyone in Singapore an opportunity to show that animals matter.

Over 600 participants (including members of the public, NGOs and government officials) are expected and the event features:

  • A Public Forum with Grassroots Adviser, Mr K Shanmugam, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Minister  for Law and MP for Nee Soon GRC (Chong Pang).
  • Presentations from and Q&A sessions with animal protection organisations on a range of issues including Humane Domestic Animal Management, Tackling Wildlife Crime and Addressing Zoo Animal Welfare Concerns.
  • A presentation from AVA about safeguarding the welfare of animals in Singapore.
  • An update on the recommendations raised at the First Public Forum on Animal Welfare Policies in 2011.
  • An exhibition area with booths from over 15 organisations.

During the forum with Minister Shanmugam, members of the public will be voicing their concerns about animal protection issues and also offer suggestions on amendments to animal protection legislation in Singapore.

“I welcome this event, and support it.  How a society treats animals, which cannot take care of themselves, says much about the nature of the society.  The increasing support we are getting for animal welfare events is heartening” said Minister Shanmugam.

“There has been significant progress in the animal protection movement in Singapore over the past year. Through this event, we hope that more people will become aware of the need to protect animals and most importantly help shape animal protection policies in Singapore. With the support of the public, Singapore will undoubtedly be a leader in the animal protection movement in this region” said Mr. Louis Ng, Executive Director of ACRES.

Animals tortured by sg working overseas should also be included. I have very disturbing photos of people using drones to scare away elephants from new clearings in oil palm plantations in Burma. I want to complain, but I do not know where to go. These drones cause a lot of suffering to animals as they emit high frequency sound and are not only used by these SGs. Now they are even selling them as pest control accessories.

This is good but what Singapore really needs is something that will protect Singaporeans from the stupidity, incompetence and greed of PAP.

  6. Animals Are Treated Like Humans, and Humans Like Animals 26 February 2012

There is a clear hidden political agenda in this event: to portray to the world that Singapore even look after the animals here, so they must have looked after Singaporeans as well. That's real bullshit because in Singapore, animals are treated better than humans. The blatant truth is that the humans are treated like animals and the anials like humans.
Gutter politics thrives in abundance here.
