SINGAPORE: A 50-year-old man was charged in court on 28 April over offensive content he allegedly posted on WhatsApp targeting the Jewish community.

Siow Jia Rui faces two counts of knowingly attempting to promote feelings of enmity between racial groups in Singapore.

He did not indicate how he would plead in court.

According to the charges, Siow is accused of posting an offending profile status on WhatsApp on 25 July 2025.

On 10 September 2025, he allegedly posted three disappearing statuses containing images with words described as offensive to Jews.

These posts were visible for 24 hours on the messaging platform.

Police said they received a report on 10 September 2025 regarding three offensive images targeting the Jewish community.

“The WhatsApp profile of the account also contained a description with antisemitic messaging,” police said in a news release.

Authorities added that the suspect was identified as the account owner and arrested three days later.

If convicted, Siow could face up to three years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both for each charge.

The case was adjourned to May.

Police emphasised that they “take a serious view of acts which have the potential to harm racial and religious harmony in Singapore and will deal firmly with offenders.”
