A viral video showing residents collecting eggs from an overturned truck in Indonesia's Central Java province has sparked widespread criticism on social media, with many users condemning what they described as a lack of empathy towards the driver, who had just suffered significant financial losses in a road accident.
The incident occurred on Sunday, 28 June, on the incline leading to Kali Kacangan Bridge in Kutawis Village, Bukateja District, Purbalingga Regency.
The victim, Arif, 50, was transporting a shipment of chicken eggs when the pickup truck he was driving overturned after he attempted to avoid another car that was travelling at high speed and occupying the centre of the road.
The accident occurred at around 4 pm local time.
Driver trapped inside overturned vehicle
According to Arif, the pickup truck rolled onto its side after he swerved to avoid the approaching vehicle.
He and his employee, Romadhon, 23, were trapped inside the cab and unable to exit immediately after the crash.
"We were still inside the cab. People came saying they wanted to help, but in fact they took all the eggs," Arif told Tribun on Tuesday.
Arif said he remained trapped inside the vehicle for around 30 minutes before he and his employee eventually managed to escape through the left-hand door.
When he climbed onto the back of the pickup truck after freeing himself, much of the surviving cargo had already disappeared.
Residents collect eggs as victims await assistance
The truck was carrying 133 crates of eggs weighing approximately 1.33 tonnes and valued at around 26 million rupiah (about $1,600).
Thousands of eggs were smashed in the accident, spilling their contents across the road and covering the asphalt with broken shells and streams of egg yolk and egg white.
However, Arif said he believed fewer than half of the eggs were actually damaged because the vehicle had not been travelling at high speed when it overturned.
He estimated that the value of the intact eggs ranged between 10 million and 13 million rupiah (about $615 to $800).
According to Arif, dozens of residents gathered around the accident scene while he and his employee remained trapped inside the overturned vehicle.
Arif said he initially believed those arriving were attempting to help recover the cargo and assist the victims. Instead, many began collecting eggs that had survived the crash.
"At that time I couldn't say anything because I was still in shock after the accident. I thought they were just collecting the eggs and moving them to the roadside," he said.
Arif said some residents were heard saying, "Alhamdulillah, it's an egg harvest," while taking the eggs from the scene, even as he and his employee were still trapped inside the cab.
After approximately 30 minutes, the two men managed to escape through the left-hand door. By the time Arif was able to inspect the cargo, he said most of the unbroken eggs had already disappeared.
"But yesterday all of the unbroken eggs were gone. The only things left in the pick-up truck were broken eggshells," he said.
Amateur video footage recorded at the scene showed people carrying containers and gathering eggs from among the debris before leaving the area.
The footage quickly circulated on social media platforms and attracted strong reactions from users across Indonesia.
Social media criticism
The footage prompted extensive criticism online, with many users expressing disappointment over what they viewed as a lack of empathy towards the accident victims.
Many argued that bystanders should have prioritised assisting Arif and his employee rather than collecting the surviving cargo.
"It is very unfortunate. At a time when someone is suffering a misfortune and urgently needs help, some people are instead focused on gaining a small personal benefit," one social media user wrote.
The removal of goods from accident scenes has been reported in various parts of Indonesia in previous years, and the latest case renewed discussion on social media about public behaviour during emergencies.
The video was widely shared on Instagram and other platforms, where users condemned the actions of those seen taking the eggs.
Business owner appeals for eggs to be returned
Despite suffering losses estimated at tens of millions of rupiah, Arif chose not to pursue legal action against residents who took the eggs.
Instead, he issued a public appeal asking anyone who had collected eggs from the accident scene to return them voluntarily.
"We appeal to residents who took eggs yesterday to please return them to the Kutawis Village Hall or directly to the Village Head's house. We sincerely hope for honesty and assistance from the community to help reduce these losses," he said.
Arif said he wanted to avoid a prolonged dispute with local residents because he regularly travels through the area to sell goods at local markets, including Sokaraja Market and Purwokerto Market.
Village authorities support initiative
The head of Kutawis Village supported the appeal and offered both the Village Hall and his private residence as collection points for residents wishing to return the eggs.
Local authorities said the initiative would be conducted on a voluntary basis and that no sanctions would be imposed on those who returned the cargo.
Arif said that when he returned to the accident site the following day, some residents suggested he should have prevented the eggs from being taken during the incident.
