CHINA: Humanoid robots captivated audiences at the 2026 Spring Festival Gala staged by China Media Group, performing synchronized martial arts routines alongside child artists.
The demonstration of advanced robotics highlighted a bold fusion of Chinese cultural heritage and high-tech innovation.
The gala, held on 16 February under the theme “Joy and Auspiciousness, Festive and Cheerful,” combined traditional Chinese performances with futuristic technology, offering a global audience a vibrant celebration of the Lunar New Year.
Robotics Industry Spotlight
China’s leading robotics firms dominated the opening segment.
According to the South China Morning Post, four companies — Unitree of Hangzhou, Magiclab of Wuxi, Galbot of Beijing, and Noetix — partnered with the gala in deals reportedly worth 100 million yuan (US$14 million).
The agreements followed last year’s viral Yangge folk dance by Unitree robots, which brought the industry into the national spotlight.
Unitree robots performed martial arts alongside child performers, executing stunts including backflips, windmill-style floor spins, and high leaps from trampolines.
Noetix’s Bumi robots appeared in a comedic sketch, while Magiclab’s humanoids joined a musical segment, showcasing the versatility of robotics in entertainment.
Global Reach and Cultural Fusion
Preliminary statistics reported by the Diplomatic Society indicated that the gala’s live broadcasts across multiple platforms reached 677 million viewers by midnight, with distribution on nearly 4,000 international media outlets — a 38-percent year-on-year increase.
The event also celebrated Chinese cultural traditions, with performances like Ancient Rhythm of the Silk Road, bringing ancient murals to life, and opera segments combining Peking Opera and Yue Opera across four generations of performers.
International artists added to the gala’s cosmopolitan appeal. American singer John Legend, French performer Hélène Rollès, and Irish group Westlife performed, while Jackie Chan joined a multi-country collaboration in Yiwu with Lionel Richie and others, demonstrating the gala’s global inclusivity.
