HONG KONG: A violent altercation involving around eight individuals at a Hong Kong railway station has led to six arrests, after footage of the incident circulated widely online.
The fight occurred at approximately 11pm on 11 April at Lo Wu station along the East Rail Line, according to police.
Authorities said the individuals involved did not know each other, and the dispute was allegedly triggered by an issue related to eye contact.
Police confirm arrests and injuries
Police said they responded to a report from MTR staff and arrested six individuals on suspicion of fighting in a public place.
All suspects have since been released on bail pending further investigations by the Border District Crime Squad.
Three individuals sustained injuries and were taken to North District Hospital for treatment. Police confirmed that their conditions were not serious.
Violent scenes captured on video
Footage shared online showed multiple men exchanging punches and kicks on the station platform, with the situation quickly escalating into a chaotic group fight.
At least one individual was seen chasing another while striking him repeatedly, while personal belongings were scattered across the ground during the scuffle.
A woman believed to be accompanying some of those involved was heard attempting to de-escalate the situation, repeatedly urging them to stop.
Ground struggle raises safety concerns
In one particularly alarming segment, two men were seen falling to the ground and engaging in a prolonged physical struggle.
One of the men appeared to pin the other down, pressing his head against the ground while continuing to strike him.
The restrained individual attempted to fight back but appeared unable to break free, with visible signs of distress during the altercation.
Observers noted that the use of force, including pressure applied to the neck, posed significant safety risks.
MTR urges respectful behaviour
In response to the incident, MTR Corporation confirmed that staff had intervened and alerted police after receiving reports of a dispute.
The operator urged passengers to remain respectful and avoid behaviour that could disrupt public order or endanger others.
Passengers were also reminded to seek assistance from staff or contact authorities if similar situations arise.
