THAILAND: A Chinese woman who staged her own kidnapping as part of a cross-border scam has been arrested in Thailand, along with three accomplices, after authorities uncovered the elaborate scheme.
The case came to light after the woman’s father reported to police in China that his daughter had allegedly been abducted overseas and subjected to abuse.
According to local reports, the suspects sent videos showing the woman being mistreated, demanding a ransom of 110,000 yuan (approximately US$15,200).
Ransom paid before suspicions raised
The father initially believed the claims and transferred the requested funds.
However, the scammers continued to pressure him, claiming that the woman had been moved across multiple countries, including Cambodia and Myanmar, before allegedly arriving in Thailand.
As communication persisted without any sign of release, suspicions grew, prompting further investigation by Chinese authorities.
Cross-border investigation leads to Thailand
The case soon escalated into a joint investigation involving Chinese authorities and the Thai Central Investigation Bureau.
Police analysed the videos sent to the victim’s father and determined that they were likely filmed in Bangkok rather than overseas conflict zones as claimed.
Further tracing revealed that the individuals involved had stayed at a hotel in the Huai Khwang district before relocating to a rented house in Samut Prakan province.
Raid uncovers staged kidnapping plot
Thai police conducted a raid on 16 April at the identified property, where six Chinese nationals were found.

Among them were the woman herself and her 29-year-old boyfriend, who was identified as the mastermind behind the operation.
Both individuals, along with two other accomplices aged 26, admitted to fabricating the kidnapping scenario to deceive the victim’s father.
Authorities confirmed that the group had staged abuse scenes on video to make the situation appear credible.
Additional suspects and legal action
Two other individuals found at the scene were not involved in the scam and were not detained.
However, the four suspects directly linked to the case were found to have entered Thailand illegally and will first face legal action there.
They are expected to be deported to China following the completion of legal proceedings for further investigation and prosecution.
Police also revealed that the boyfriend had previously been wanted in China for alleged involvement in online fraud cases.
This has raised concerns that the staged kidnapping may be part of a broader pattern of organised scam operations involving cross-border elements.
