A student from Nanyang Junior College (NYJC) has been suspended from school and a police report lodged after he was allegedly found in a girls' toilet on campus, with witnesses claiming he had attempted to film female students.

Online news platform Mothership reported on 17 April that it had received a video showing two students confronting the male student inside the girls' toilet. The confrontation is believed to have taken place on the school's campus, though the exact date of the alleged incident has not been confirmed.

In a media statement on 17 April, NYJC principal Pang Choon How confirmed that the school was aware of the incident and had lodged a report with the police.

"We take a serious view on sexual misconduct and have taken disciplinary actions against the student involved," Pang said in the statement.

"The student has been suspended from school and will have his conduct grade adversely impacted."

Pang added that the school's counsellor had spoken to the student about his actions and that he would be referred for further professional support. The school is also working closely with the student's parents on the matter.

"We take the well-being of our students seriously and have engaged students on the incident," Pang said. "We have also checked in with affected students on their well-being and will continue to look out for and offer support to students who may be affected."

The school said it would continue to take the necessary steps to maintain a safe and conducive learning environment.

The police confirmed on 17 April that a report had been lodged and investigations are ongoing. The Straits Times reported it had contacted NYJC to clarify when the alleged incident occurred and the duration of the student's suspension, with no response at the time of publication.

How the incident came to light

The matter first came to public attention through a post on the Singapore subreddit, before being picked up by Mothership. A user on the thread who claimed to be the person who had discovered the student in the toilet urged caution and called on the public to refrain from harassment.

"From what I saw, he was hiding in the toilet for quite a while and there was nobody except me when I discovered him," the user wrote. "I did not see him record anything so please do not assume his intentions just yet."

The user also warned against doxxing and online harassment, noting that such actions could have severe consequences for the student and his family.
