Unfilial son jailed 13 weeks for assaulting father and locking him out of home

SINGAPORE: A 40-year-old man has been sentenced to 13 weeks’ imprisonment after repeatedly locking his 74-year-old father out of their home and assaulting him during a dispute over purchasing testosterone patches.
The sentence was handed down on 22 April 2026 after the man pleaded guilty to two counts of assault.
Two additional charges were taken into consideration during sentencing.
According to Lianhe Zaobao, the victim and his spouse are the owners of a Housing and Development Board (HDB) flat where the incidents occurred.
Six months of exclusion from home
Court proceedings heard that the accused had prevented his father from returning home at night over a six-month period leading up to the assaults.
During this time, the elderly man was frequently forced to sleep at the void deck of the housing block after being denied entry.
The court was told that the accused would occasionally allow his father back into the flat, but only on the condition that he purchased breakfast.
Even when allowed inside, the father’s movements were restricted.
The accused reportedly confiscated his father’s mobile phone, preventing him from contacting others.
The situation extended to the household more broadly.
The accused’s mother was also forced to leave the flat and stayed with her daughter.
However, due to limited space, the daughter’s home could not accommodate both parents.
Assaults triggered by refusal
The violence escalated on 22 February 2026 after the father refused to buy testosterone patches for the accused, who believed he had a testosterone deficiency.
Following the refusal, the accused kicked his father three times and punched his arm twice.
The elderly man experienced pain but did not seek medical treatment.
Later that day, he was again barred from entering the flat and had to spend the night outside.
Threats and repeated violence
At around 5am on 23 February, the father attempted to return home.
The accused again demanded that he purchase the testosterone patches.
When the demand was not met, the accused issued threats, saying “this story won’t end” and warning that he would burn down the flat.
The confrontation turned violent once more.
The accused punched his father twice near the left eye, causing dizziness.
The victim again did not seek medical attention.
The accused was arrested later that same day.
He was charged in court on 25 February and had been in remand since then.
In addition to the two assault charges, the court took into consideration two further offences.
These included one count of using criminal force on his mother.
Residents in the area had noticed the elderly man sleeping outside prior to the incident.
A 79-year-old neighbour told Zaobao that he had occasionally seen the victim resting at the void deck or sitting alone downstairs.
He added that there were instances where the elderly man was seen sleeping under nearby housing blocks.
Neighbours had speculated that he had been forced out of his home, although details were unclear at the time.
The neighbour also recalled giving the man S$5 on one occasion to buy food.
