UNITED STATES: On 8 May 2026 at approximately 11.19 pm local time, a person was struck and killed by Frontier Airlines Flight 4345 during takeoff from Runway 17L at Denver International Airport.
The aircraft was departing for Los Angeles when the collision occurred.
According to airport officials, the impact caused a brief engine fire, which was quickly extinguished by emergency responders.
The flight crew immediately initiated an emergency evacuation of the aircraft.
Twelve passengers sustained minor injuries during the evacuation, and five were transported to hospital for further treatment.
The identity of the deceased has not been released.
Authorities said the incident is being treated as a runway intrusion case involving unauthorised access to restricted airport property.
Perimeter breach and runway entry
Officials stated that the individual accessed airport grounds by scaling a perimeter fence before entering the airfield.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the person had unlawfully entered airport property prior to the collision.
A spokesperson for Denver International Airport said that security personnel and police regularly patrol the airport perimeter.
The spokesperson added that the individual entered the runway shortly after breaching the fence.
The airport also stated that a post-incident inspection found the perimeter fencing to be intact.
Newly released surveillance footage
Newly released surveillance footage, including thermal imaging, shows the sequence of movement leading up to the incident.
The thermal imagery captures the person walking across open terrain within the airport environment in low-light conditions. The individual continues moving across unlit ground toward operational runway areas used by departing aircraft.
The footage shows the person progressing towards Runway 17L as the Frontier Airlines aircraft is in its takeoff phase.
The sequence indicates the individual moving into the aircraft’s path moments before impact.
Airport radio communications
Audio from airport radio traffic indicates that personnel were aware of a runway intrusion shortly before the collision.
Dispatchers referenced an active situation on Runway 17L and initiated emergency response procedures.
Shortly after, responders confirmed that an aircraft had struck an individual on the runway.
Runway 17L was immediately closed following the incident, and emergency units were deployed to the scene.
Investigation underway
The Denver Police Department is leading the investigation into the incident, working alongside the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said it is still assessing whether the case meets criteria for a formal investigation.
Authorities have not released further details regarding how the individual accessed the secured airfield beyond the reported perimeter breach.
