Indonesia arrests man accused of confining and assaulting woman for nearly three years
West Java Police have arrested a fugitive suspect accused of unlawfully confining and seriously assaulting a woman in Bandung Regency, concluding a manhunt that followed allegations she was held and abused over several years.

Indonesian police have arrested Taufik Hidayat (30), the main suspect in a case involving alleged unlawful confinement and aggravated assault against a 29-year-old woman identified as Yuvita Tri Rezeki (YTR), from Rancaekek, Bandung Regency. The arrest took place on Tuesday evening (23 June 2026) in Majalaya, within the jurisdiction of Bandung Police.
According to police statements, the arrest followed a period in which the suspect had been listed as a fugitive (DPO) and had reportedly been moving between locations to avoid capture.
West Java Police Public Relations Head, Senior Commissioner Hendra Rochmawan, confirmed the arrest when contacted on Tuesday evening.
He stated that the suspect had been detained in Majalaya and that an official press briefing would be held on Wednesday (24 June 2026) to provide further details.
The arrest concludes a manhunt that began after authorities received a report of serious assault and unlawful confinement involving the victim.
Manhunt and evasion
Police said the suspect had been difficult to locate in the days leading up to his arrest due to frequent relocation. Authorities previously stated that officers had come close to apprehending him during an attempted raid, but he managed to escape before the operation could be carried out.
Investigators continued tracking the suspect using mapping and surveillance methods while the search remained active following the formal identification of Taufik Hidayat as a wanted individual.
Arrest confirmed by regional authorities
The arrest was also publicly acknowledged by West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi (KDM), who initially stated that the suspect had been detained in Majalengka before clarification confirmed the location as Majalaya.
West Java Police Chief Inspector General Rudi Setiawan also confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspect had been apprehended. Police spokesperson Hendra Rochmawan further confirmed that Taufik Hidayat had been taken into custody within the Bandung Police jurisdiction.
Authorities said the suspect has been charged under provisions relating to assault and unlawful confinement, including Article 466 of Indonesia’s 2023 Criminal Code, along with additional relevant legal articles.
Background of the case
The case gained public attention after Yuvita Tri Rezeki (YTR) was admitted to Dr Hasan Sadikin Hospital (RSHS) in Bandung in a severely injured condition. According to reports, she was allegedly found after being held captive and assaulted over a period of approximately three years.
According to information provided by relatives, Yuvita Tri Rezeki (YTR) was reunited with her family on 10 June after hospital admission. Family members stated they had lost regular contact with her for around three years and initially believed she had been involved in an accident.
Medical staff reportedly identified a combination of old and recent injuries. The victim was placed under intensive treatment, including surgery for severe infections and wounds. She has also suffered lasting impairment, including damage affecting her speech.
Allegations made by family members
Family members have alleged that the victim was held in rented accommodation in the Cileunyi area of Bandung Regency and was repeatedly relocated during the period in question. They also stated that she was prevented from using a mobile phone and had limited contact with relatives.
The family further alleged that the victim experienced repeated violence involving blunt and sharp objects, including head injuries and other physical assaults over an extended period. They also reported that she suffered severe eye infections resulting in permanent blindness.
In addition, the family stated that personal belongings belonging to the victim were taken during the period in question, with estimated losses of approximately Rp52 million (around US$3,170).
The case was formally reported to the West Java Regional Police on 12 June.
Police investigation
West Java Police have confirmed that the case is being investigated as alleged aggravated assault under Indonesia’s Criminal Code. Authorities stated that efforts to locate the suspect involved digital tracking and field operations, with officers continuing the search after initial attempts to detain him were unsuccessful.
Police spokesperson Hendra Rochmawan said officers had been pursuing the suspect for several days and that he had frequently changed locations during the investigation period.
