On 22 Feb, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) is looking into a case involving a rodent sighted on a foodcourt table at Lucky Plaza in Orchard Road, after a video of the incident surfaced on social media.

The 18-second clip, posted on Reddit on 19 Feb with the caption “Rat fall from the sky?”, shows a rodent on a plate containing food at a table.

A man is later seen using a small tablecloth to trap the animal before removing it.

The exact date and time of the incident were not stated in the post.

SFA Response

Responding to queries, SFA said it takes a serious view of food safety lapses and will examine all feedback alleging poor hygiene practices.

“As part of the inquiry and gathering of evidence, SFA may engage the feedback provider for more details and will not hesitate to take enforcement action if sufficient evidence has been obtained,” the agency said.

Operator’s Actions

The operator of Asian Food Mall, which occupies Basement 1 of Lucky Plaza, said it was alerted to the matter soon after it happened and acted to manage the situation.

According to the operator, the rodent and the affected dish were cleared, and the impacted area underwent cleaning and disinfection.

The customer involved was provided with a fresh serving.

It also said additional sanitation measures and inspections were subsequently carried out across the premises by its cleaning team and licensed pest control professionals.

The operator described the episode as an isolated occurrence and said it has continued routine pest management and hygiene checks in coordination with the mall’s management.

SFA noted that while it enforces regulatory requirements, food businesses are responsible for maintaining proper hygiene standards and adhering to safe food preparation practices.
