THAILAND: Thailand’s annual military conscription exercise has once again drawn public attention, with transgender women emerging as a notable focus during this year’s draft process.
Images circulating online showed individuals attending conscription centres across the country, with some drawing attention for their fashion and presentation.

The development has sparked discussions about gender identity and administrative requirements within Thailand’s military system.

Conscription rules apply to all registered males
Under Thai law, all eligible males are required to report to conscription centres when called.
Failure to attend can result in penalties of up to three years’ imprisonment.
This requirement also applies to individuals who have undergone gender reassignment, as official identification documents may still list them as male.

Exemptions required for transgender women
Transgender women must obtain an official exemption letter at the conscription centre to avoid being drafted into military service.
While some attendees arrived in standard attire, others used the occasion to express themselves more visibly, drawing attention on social media platforms.
Online users later compiled and shared images of such appearances from multiple locations nationwide.
Volunteer system and draft process
Thai males become eligible for conscription at the age of 21, with service periods typically lasting up to two years.
This year, 27,698 individuals volunteered for service, accounting for approximately 44 per cent of those called up, according to local reports.
The figure represents an increase compared to the previous year.
Service duration varies by education level
Those who volunteer may serve shorter terms, depending on their educational background.
University graduates typically serve six months, while high school graduates serve one year.
Remaining positions are filled through a lottery system among eligible individuals who did not volunteer.
Lottery system determines final selection
Participants draw cards from a box, with black indicating exemption and red requiring enlistment.
The process often draws strong emotional reactions, with individuals visibly celebrating exemption or expressing disappointment upon being selected.
This year’s conscription saw a total of 62,318 men drafted to meet military personnel requirements.
