MALAYSIA: An independent animal rescuer has raised alarm after a dog was allegedly abused in an incident captured on CCTV, prompting calls for stronger action against animal cruelty in Malaysia.
According to rescuer Kavitha Mahalingam, the case came to light after a video surfaced online showing a man carrying the dog before reportedly throwing it against a wall.
The dog, later identified as Qiu Qiu, was found injured and required immediate medical attention following the alleged incident.
Rescue carried out with assistance
Kavitha said the rescue operation was carried out with the help of another individual who had been alerted to the footage.
The individual contacted the property owner, and together with a friend, they accessed the premises using a spare key to retrieve the dog.
Qiu Qiu was then transported to a veterinary clinic, where it is currently receiving treatment for its injuries.
Injury confirmed, surgery expected
A veterinary report confirmed that the dog sustained a fracture to its right oblique olecranon, believed to have occurred within the past week.
The injury is considered serious, and Qiu Qiu is expected to undergo surgery as part of its recovery process.
Kavitha noted that the dog remains under close observation as veterinarians assess its condition and plan further treatment.
Claims of prior abuse raised
Kavitha also alleged that the man involved may have a history of animal cruelty, including claims of previous harm to other animals.
However, these allegations have not been independently verified, and no official confirmation has been provided by authorities at this stage.
The man reportedly claimed that the dog had bitten him, which he said led to the incident.
Multiple reports filed, probe ongoing
Several police reports have been lodged between 16 April and 19 April, according to Kavitha, with complaints submitted at multiple stations.
Reports have also been filed with the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS), which is responsible for overseeing animal welfare enforcement in Malaysia.
Authorities have confirmed that the case is under investigation, although no further updates have been released at the time of writing.
