A 23-year-old construction worker has died after being struck by a temporary concrete section during excavation works at the future Turf City MRT station in Bukit Timah, authorities confirmed on Saturday, 17 May 2026.

The incident occurred at approximately 1.30pm on Wednesday, 14 May, at 250A Turf Club Road. The station forms part of Singapore's upcoming Cross Island Line.

How the incident unfolded

According to the Land Transport Authority (LTA), as reported by The Straits Times, the incident took place in a work area where an excavator was engaged in removing concrete beneath a concrete deck.

The deceased had been assigned the role of banksman — a worker responsible for guiding the movement of large vehicles or heavy machinery and for keeping others out of the work zone.

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said the worker was struck by a temporary concrete section during the hacking process. Police arrived to find him motionless, and paramedics from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) pronounced him dead at the scene.

Preliminary investigations by the police have ruled out foul play.

Contractors and site occupier identified

LTA identified the deceased's employer as Koh Kock Leong Construction, a sub-contractor working under the main contractor, Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co (Singapore) - Obayashi Corporation Joint Venture.

MOM ordered the site occupier, STECS-Obayashi CR203 Joint Venture, to cease all excavation work at the location pending investigation.

LTA extended its condolences to the family of the deceased. "We are deeply saddened by this incident and extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased worker. We are working with the contractors to provide support and assistance to the family," it said.

LTA added that it is supporting MOM and the police in their investigations.

Safety protocols highlighted

MOM used the incident to reiterate established safety requirements for excavation works. A spokesperson stated that the hacking and removal of any temporary concrete section must be carried out in a controlled manner, and that exclusion zones must be strictly enforced at all times.

MOM also addressed the specific risks faced by banksmen. While they play a critical role in safeguarding others by monitoring hazards and controlling access to work zones, the ministry stressed that banksmen must equally ensure they do not position themselves within potential danger zones.
