Stepmother jailed 6 years, 3 months over abuse of 5-year-old girl beaten to death by father in 2017
A 35-year-old woman has been sentenced to six years and three months’ imprisonment for her role in the systematic abuse and neglect of her stepdaughter and stepson, which resulted in the death of the five-year-old girl and severe developmental harm to her younger brother.

- The 35-year-old defendant was sentenced to 75 months’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to charges of child ill-treatment and providing false information to police.
- The victims, Ayeesha and her younger brother, were subjected to nearly two years of starvation and physical abuse, including being confined naked in a toilet for ten months.
- District Judge Eugene Teo noted the irony of the defendant seeking mercy after showing none to the vulnerable victims, whose father is currently serving a life sentence for the killing.
SINGAPORE: A 35-year-old Singaporean woman was sentenced to six years and three months’ imprisonment on 13 March 2026 for her involvement in the fatal abuse of her five-year-old stepdaughter and the severe neglect of the girl’s younger brother.
The sentencing marks the conclusion of a long-running legal process involving what the court described as prolonged ill-treatment of especially vulnerable victims.
The abuse stretched across several months and involved physical violence, starvation and extreme deprivation within the family home.
District Judge Eugene Teo, who presided over the case, said it was painfully ironic for the defendant to seek mercy when so little had been shown to the children.
Guilty plea to abuse and misleading police
The defendant pleaded guilty to three charges, including the ill-treatment of a child and giving false information to the police.
While she cared for her own biological children, she participated in the systematic abuse of her husband’s children from a previous relationship.
The High Court earlier ordered that the deceased girl be identified as Ayeesha so society would remember her.
The move was intended to restore dignity to a child who spent the final ten months of her life confined naked inside a toilet.
Toilet used as punishment confinement
The toilet was used as a designated “naughty corner” created by the offenders.
For nearly two years, Ayeesha and her younger brother endured extreme neglect and chronic hunger.
Evidence presented in court showed the children became so desperate that they resorted to eating their own faeces.
During this time, the woman’s biological children were sent to school and provided with normal care.

Abuse hidden from authorities
Ayeesha and her brother were kept at home while their father offered various false explanations to authorities to justify their absence from school.
These explanations were used to conceal the deteriorating conditions in which the children were living.
The concealment continued for months while the victims’ physical condition worsened significantly.
Fatal assault in August 2017
Ayeesha died in August 2017 after suffering a fatal head injury during an assault carried out by her father.
The violence began after the stepmother complained about the children to him.
In response, he slapped the girl repeatedly until her head tilted at an unnatural angle.
Later that same day, after another complaint from the stepmother, the father returned to the toilet and launched a second assault.
He punched both children and delivered additional kicks and stamps to Ayeesha.
She eventually died from the injuries in the same confinement area.
Attempted cover-up after the death
After discovering the girl had died, the couple coordinated a cover-up.
The stepmother filed a police report falsely claiming her husband had raped and beaten her.
She maintained the fabricated account even while giving testimony during her husband’s High Court trial.
Father jailed for life
The father, who was 45 at the time of sentencing, was eventually jailed for life in 2025.
His life sentence followed a failed appeal to reduce an earlier 35-year prison term.
The court determined that he was the primary perpetrator of the violence that caused Ayeesha’s death.
Protection of surviving brother
A gag order remains in place to protect the identity of the surviving brother, who is one year younger than Ayeesha.
The order prevents the naming of the offenders to safeguard the boy’s privacy as he continues his recovery.
Medical examinations conducted after the abuse was uncovered revealed that he was severely malnourished and dehydrated.
His weight was significantly below the third percentile for children in his age group.
Doctors later diagnosed him with global developmental delay caused by extreme social deprivation.
At the time of his rescue, he was socially withdrawn and unable to stand or speak independently.
Sentencing arguments and judge’s remarks
Prosecutors had sought a sentence ranging between five and seven years for the stepmother.
They noted her decision to plead guilty, contrasting it with the father’s decision to contest the charges at trial.
Defence lawyer Ashwin Ganapathy from the Public Defender’s Office requested a five-year sentence.
He described the case as a tragedy that defied easy description and highlighted the lasting psychological harm suffered by the surviving child.
The defence argued that the father’s role as the primary perpetrator should place the stepmother lower in the hierarchy of responsibility.
Judge Teo acknowledged the father’s betrayal as particularly deplorable.
However, he ruled that the stepmother’s participation in the abuse remained gravely serious before ordering the prison sentence.
