HONG KONG: A video circulating on social media platform Threads on 29 March has reignited public concern over school bullying in Hong Kong, showing a confrontation involving three secondary school students inside a McDonald’s outlet in the Eastern District.
The footage, which quickly drew widespread attention online, appears to show two male students confronting and physically restraining a third student wearing glasses.
The incident prompted renewed debate over youth behaviour and the handling of bullying cases, even though authorities later clarified that the case had occurred earlier and had already been resolved.
Altercation captured inside fast-food outlet
The 11-second video shows the bespectacled student being held down by one individual while another pours a drink over him and subsequently slaps him across the face. The victim is seen struggling to break free before retaliating by throwing a drink cup at the student who struck him.
The situation escalated briefly as the aggressor appeared ready to continue the confrontation. However, an older man at the scene intervened, pushing the student away and stopping further violence. The student was then heard responding defensively, claiming that he had been attacked first.
The clip ends shortly after the intervention, but not before capturing what many viewers described as clear signs of group intimidation.
School confirms incident was previously handled
The school involved, identified as Lingnan Secondary School in Hong Kong, confirmed that the incident took place in early summer 2025. In a statement, the school said it had responded promptly after becoming aware of the situation, conducting an internal investigation and engaging with the students and their parents.
The school added that disciplinary measures were taken in accordance with its regulations, and the students involved were educated on the seriousness of their actions. It emphasised that the case had been concluded and appealed to the public to allow the students an opportunity to reflect and move forward.
According to one of the students involved, the altercation stemmed from a dispute in which the bespectacled student had allegedly struck him first, leading to an emotional reaction. He stated that apologies had since been made to the McDonald’s outlet and that the students involved had reconciled.
Legal perspective on bullying in Hong Kong
Authorities noted that bullying behaviour in Hong Kong can fall under various criminal offences, particularly those related to assault under the Offences Against the Person Ordinance. Depending on the severity, offences may include common assault, assault causing bodily harm, or more serious charges involving intentional injury.
Penalties can range from fines to imprisonment, with more severe cases carrying sentences of up to several years. Officials have reiterated that acts of violence, intimidation or harassment, whether inside or outside school premises, may have legal consequences.
Ongoing focus on student behaviour and awareness
The Education Bureau has reiterated its zero-tolerance stance towards violence and bullying in schools, emphasising the importance of early intervention, counselling and education. Schools have been encouraged to strengthen programmes promoting empathy, conflict resolution and responsible behaviour both online and offline.
The resurfacing of the video has also highlighted the role of social media in amplifying past incidents, raising concerns about potential secondary harm to those involved. Authorities have reminded the public to act responsibly when sharing such content.
While the case itself has been resolved, the incident continues to serve as a reminder of the need for vigilance, education and timely intervention in addressing bullying among students.
