Man in Malaysia arrested after chasing police officer with knife in Kuala Langat

MALAYSIA: A violent incident at a seafood restaurant in Telok Mengkuang, Kuala Langat, escalated into a public safety scare on 3 April.

The incident, which occurred at about 3.30pm, involved a local man who allegedly became aggressive after being confronted over an unpaid meal.

Videos of the incident quickly spread across social media, showing chaotic scenes unfolding in a busy public area.

Viral footage shows suspect chasing police officer

Footage shared online showed a shirtless man rushing out of the restaurant while wielding a chopping knife. 

He was seen chasing a police officer, who was wearing a helmet, into the middle of the road in full view of bystanders.

The suspect appeared highly agitated and continued pursuing the officer despite the presence of the public.

In another clip, members of the public were seen helping to restrain the suspect on the ground, though he continued to struggle.

Police officers later arrived and placed him in handcuffs, bringing the situation under control.

Property damage and public risk reported

According to police, the suspect caused damage inside the restaurant during the incident.

The disturbance also affected nearby areas, with three public vehicles reportedly damaged.

The suspect’s actions posed a serious risk to both the public and law enforcement officers at the scene.

Witnesses described the situation as chaotic, with diners and passers-by watching the incident unfold.

Police confirm arrest and suspect’s actions

Kuala Langat district police chief Supt Mohd Akmalrizal Radzi confirmed that officers responded to the incident and arrested the suspect.

He said the man was armed with a meat cleaver and a rattan stick, and had acted aggressively towards police officers and patrol vehicles.

“The suspect acted aggressively and brandished the weapons at police officers and patrol vehicles, posing a threat to both authorities and the public,” he said in a statement.

The suspect was later taken to Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang for further examination.

Dispute allegedly triggered by unpaid bill

Preliminary investigations indicated that the incident began when restaurant staff confronted the suspect for failing to pay for his meal.

The man allegedly became enraged and began acting violently, which escalated into the incident captured in viral videos.

Authorities also revealed that the suspect had brought the knife with him prior to the incident.

Further checks showed that he has four prior criminal records and one drug-related offence.

Case under investigation

Police are investigating the case under Section 353 of the Penal Code for using criminal force to deter public servants, and Section 427 for committing mischief and causing damage.

The suspect is also being investigated under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive Substances, Explosives and Dangerous Weapons Act.

Authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation and to come forward with any information to assist investigations.

The case remains under investigation as police continue to gather details.
