THAILAND: A four-year-old girl in Mueang district of Khon Kaen was found dead inside a parked car on 28 April, in a case that has raised concerns about child safety and the dangers of enclosed vehicles in hot weather.
Police said the incident occurred at a residence in the Thepharak 5 community along Pracha Samosorn Road, where the child had been at home with her mother prior to the discovery.
Authorities are continuing investigations to determine the full circumstances surrounding the case.
Child reportedly entered vehicle alone
According to police, the girl’s 34-year-old mother told investigators that she had returned home earlier in the day and informed her daughter that they would be going out later.
The mother then went inside the house to rest, believing that the child would remain nearby or visit her grandmother, who lived in the same area.
However, at some point, the girl reportedly went outside on her own and entered the family car without anyone noticing.
Discovery made hours later
The mother later went outside and found her daughter lying motionless inside the vehicle.
She immediately removed the child from the car and attempted to wake her, but there was no response.
Emergency services were contacted, and rescue personnel arrived at the scene shortly after, but the child was pronounced dead.
CCTV footage provides key timeline
Investigators reviewed surveillance footage from the property, which showed the girl opening the rear right door of the car and entering the vehicle by herself.
The footage indicated that she then closed the door, remaining inside the car without any other person present.
Police said this evidence suggests that the child had been alone in the vehicle for an extended period.
Heat and suffocation suspected
Authorities believe the girl may have succumbed to heat exposure and lack of ventilation inside the parked car.
The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued an urgent warning regarding "hot to very hot" weather conditions across upper Thailand, including Khon Kaen, as a low-pressure cell caused by intense heat covers the region.
In a series of advisories leading into early May 2026, officials reported that the heat index—a measure of how the temperature feels when combined with humidity—has surged into the "very dangerous" category, occasionally exceeding 50°C (122°F).
Authorities have urged the public, especially vulnerable groups like young children and the elderly, to avoid prolonged outdoor activities and stay hydrated to prevent life-threatening conditions such as heatstroke.
Temperatures inside enclosed vehicles can rise rapidly, especially in warm climates, creating dangerous conditions within a short period of time.
Police noted that prolonged exposure to such conditions can lead to suffocation or heat-related complications, particularly in young children.
