Holidaymakers in Singapore planning weekend getaways will be able to enjoy five long weekends in 2027, beginning with New Year's Day, which falls on a Friday.

In total, there will be 11 public holidays next year. The Manpower Ministry set out the gazetted public holidays for 2027 in a statement issued on Thursday, 18 June 2026.

Chinese New Year in 2027 will fall on 6 and 7 February, a Saturday and Sunday. As a result, the following Monday, 8 February, will be observed as a public holiday.

Hari Raya Puasa on 10 March will fall on a Wednesday, while Good Friday will be observed on 26 March.

Labour Day and Christmas Day will both fall on a Saturday in 2027.

Two public holidays will fall on a Monday, creating long weekends: Hari Raya Haji on 17 May and National Day in August.

Vesak Day on 20 May and Deepavali on 28 October will each fall on a Thursday.

Under Singapore rules, workers are entitled to full pay during the 11 public holidays.

However, employers and employees may come to an agreement to substitute a public holiday for another working day.

Employees who are required to work on a public holiday are entitled to an extra day's salary at the basic rate of pay, in addition to their gross rate of pay for that day.

Employers also have the option of granting time off in return for working an agreed number of hours on a public holiday.

This arrangement applies to workmen earning more than S$4,500 a month, and non-workmen earning more than S$2,600 a month, including managers and executives.

A workman is usually defined as someone whose work involves mainly manual labour.

Singapore's total of 11 public holidays remains among the lowest in Southeast Asia, though it is not the absolute lowest in the region.

The region comprises 11 countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and East Timor.

Drawing on data attributed to the ASEAN Secretariat and other sources, Indonesia leads the regional table with 27 national holidays.

Cambodia and Thailand follow with 22 each, while the Philippines records 19 and Vietnam 18.

Myanmar and Malaysia each observe 17 national holidays, followed by Brunei with 15.

Singapore sits towards the lower end of the table with 11, while Laos records the fewest at seven.
