JOHOR, MALAYSIA: Five people were killed and several others injured on 1 June 2026 after a BMW 530e allegedly travelling at high speed lost control and collided with multiple oncoming vehicles along Jalan Renggam–Simpang Renggam in Kluang, Johor, Malaysia.
The crash occurred at approximately 1:15pm near Kilometre 27 of the road. Initial police investigations indicated the BMW was being driven by a 22-year-old man travelling from Kluang towards Simpang Renggam.
The BMW was believed to have been travelling at speed alongside a Mercedes-Benz A250 driven by the BMW driver's younger brother, aged 19.
Dashcam footage that circulated widely online captured the two luxury vehicles speeding along the two-lane road, with one appearing to overtake the other across a double solid line.
The BMW subsequently lost control, crossed into the opposite lane, and struck a Perodua Alza, a Toyota Vios, a Proton Wira, and a second Mercedes-Benz, according to Kluang district police chief Asst Comm Bahrin Mohd Noh, as reported by Bernama.
The BMW then plunged into a ravine. Its driver died while being transported to hospital.
Family of four killed at scene
All four occupants of the Toyota Vios were pronounced dead at the scene, having sustained severe head and body injuries. They were identified as Mohd Aiman Mohd Rashid, 36; his wife, Nor Azlina Abd Latif, 33; her mother, Semek Mat Soh, 73; and his niece, Nur Airish Syifa Sidek, 10.
The family had been travelling from a relative's celebration in Telok Emas, Melaka, and were on their way to Kota Tinggi when the crash occurred, according to the New Straits Times.
Renggam Fire and Rescue Station operations commander said several victims were found trapped inside one of the vehicles when firefighters arrived.
One elderly woman had been thrown from the car and was found on top of one of the luxury vehicles.
Two children travelling in the Perodua Alza — an 11-year-old boy and a seven-year-old girl — suffered head injuries and were receiving treatment at Enche' Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital in Kluang, Bernama reported.
The 43-year-old Alza driver sustained leg injuries, while the 22-year-old Proton Wira driver suffered injuries to his mouth. A 57-year-old woman driving the second Mercedes-Benz sustained minor injuries to her chest and face; her two passengers were unhurt.
Grief compounded by earlier loss
The tragedy followed a period of acute loss for the family. Mohd Aiman's aunt, Nor Haida Dolah, 54, told The Sun that Mohd Aiman's father had died of intestinal cancer just two weeks before the crash.
"Today we are hit with the most heartbreaking news that not only Mohd Aiman but his wife, his mother-in-law and his niece have died in the crash," she said.
Nor Haida said Mohd Aiman had lived and worked at the Felda Ulu Sedili Oil Palm Plantation in Johor.
Family laid to rest in Dungun
Nor Azlina's niece, Nurul Hidayah Kamarruddin, 29, told The Sun that she had last seen her aunt at a family gathering in Jasin, Melaka, on 30 May 2026 — two days before the crash.
She said the family had not taken the usual photos and videos at that gathering, choosing instead to focus on spending time together.
"When I was told that they had been involved in a crash and had died, I was speechless because I had only just met them. I immediately rushed to Kluang," Nurul Hidayah said.
The remains of the family of four were transported in separate hearses to Dungun in Terengganu, where they were buried together in a single grave in Al-Muktafi Billah Shah. More than 200 relatives and friends attended the funeral.
Mercedes-Benz driver arrested; murder probe ordered
Police arrested the 19-year-old Mercedes-Benz A250 driver on Monday to assist with investigations. A urine test conducted on him returned negative for prohibited substances.
Kluang police confirmed a one-day extension of his remand order was granted by Magistrate Mujib Saroji to facilitate continued investigation.
The New Straits Times reported that the 19-year-old is a university student studying in Singapore.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) and Section 42(1) of Malaysia's Road Transport Act 1987, covering causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar has since directed police to classify the investigation as both murder and reckless driving causing death, the New Straits Times reported.
"We have instructed that the investigation be classified as murder and reckless driving causing the death of road users," Dusuki said.
The final determination on charges would only be made after the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) had thoroughly reviewed the findings of the police investigation, he added.
The AGC expressed deep regret over the tragedy and said it was disappointed that, despite stern action taken in previous fatal road accident cases including murder charges, there appeared to be little deterrent effect among errant drivers.
Transport Minister Loke Siew Fook separately urged police to expedite their investigation and submit the investigation papers to the AGC as soon as possible.
"This is a tragedy that should never have happened. Appropriate legal action must be taken against the driver responsible for causing this accident," Loke said in a statement.
"A driving licence does not allow someone to drive recklessly or carelessly in a manner that claims innocent lives."
