MALAYSIA: Six members of the same family were killed after a Proton X50 collided with a lorry at about 3.45pm on 7 June in Kampung Baru Pinang Tunggal, Sungai Petani, Kedah.
The vehicle had reportedly been purchased and delivered earlier the same day, with family members describing it as a newly acquired SUV that was still being used on its first outing.
Family trip to visit gravesite
According to family member Ibrahim Ghazali, 39, the journey was intended as a trip to visit the grave of his late father-in-law in Merbok.
He said the two brothers involved in the journey, Ahmad Syafiq Ahmad Shukri and Ahmad Fahim Ahmad Shukri, along with other relatives, had set out together for the visit.
The group had stopped at his home in Bertam Putra, Penang, where they picked up his seven-year-old son, who later became one of the victims.
Ibrahim said the child was excited to ride in the newly delivered vehicle and quickly finished his meal before joining the trip.
Vehicle ownership and occupants
Free Malaysia Today reported that the Proton X50 belonged to Ahmad Fahim Ahmad Shukri, 21, but was being driven by his older brother, Ahmad Syafiq Ahmad Shukri, 27, at the time of the crash.
The group included family members spanning multiple generations, including children and elderly relatives, travelling together for what was described as a family outing.
Harian Metro reported that the SUV had only been collected from a dealership in Juru, Penang, around 11am that morning, and still had protective plastic wrapping on some of its seats at the time of the collision.
Crash details and dashcam footage
Dashcam footage widely circulated online reportedly showed the Proton X50 travelling along a straight stretch of road before entering the opposite lane and colliding with a lorry carrying soil.
The collision occurred at around 3.45pm.
Victims identified
Authorities and multiple media outlets confirmed six fatalities in the crash.
Those killed included the driver, Ahmad Syafiq Ahmad Shukri; his brother, Ahmad Fahim Ahmad Shukri; their mother, Nora Mohd Husin, aged 55; and Jamaliah Sannusi, 27, who was Syafiq’s wife.
Two children were also killed, including a seven-year-old child and a six-month-old baby.
Another child, aged three, survived but sustained serious injuries and was hospitalised.
Police investigation and response
Kedah police confirmed that investigations are ongoing into the cause of the collision.
Authorities said the lorry driver tested negative for drugs and was travelling at about 60km/h, according to The Rakyat Post. The driver also had prior traffic summonses.
Police added that the lorry driver was detained for investigation under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, but a remand application was later rejected by the Sungai Petani Magistrate’s Court.
Officials also urged the public not to spread unverified claims circulating online, including rumours about intoxication and other speculative details.
The Proton X50 is expected to be sent to PUSPAKOM, Malaysia's vehicle inspection authority, for a technical examination as part of the ongoing investigation into the crash.
