MALAYSIA: A petrol station worker in Selangor has been praised online after a viral video appeared to show him stopping a driver of a Singapore-registered vehicle from pumping Malaysia's subsidised RON95 petrol.

According to information accompanying the video on TikTok, the incident allegedly took place at a petrol station in Taman Sri Andalas, Klang, on 20 June 2026.

The footage shows a vehicle bearing Singapore registration plates at a fuel pump before a station employee approaches and removes the fuel nozzle.

The worker is then seen speaking to the driver while pointing towards the vehicle's registration plate before the camera moves away from the scene.

Online reactions praise worker

Many social media users commended the employee for intervening.

Some praised his sense of responsibility and understanding of regulations.

"This is the kind of worker we want, not someone who is just waiting for a salary. What's important is understanding the country's laws and acting responsibly because the work he does is part of serving the nation."

Others praised his integrity and dedication.

"May he be blessed with good fortune for being trustworthy in his work."

Several commenters also expressed appreciation for the worker's actions.

"Respect to this petrol station worker. May he be rewarded with good fortune."

Debate continues online

The incident also generated discussion on Reddit.

Some users called for stricter measures against offenders.

Others criticised the alleged actions of the driver.

Enforcement tightened against misuse of subsidised fuel

Malaysia has stepped up enforcement efforts against the misuse of subsidised RON95 petrol by foreign-registered vehicles.

In a Facebook post on 26 March, Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Armizan Mohd Ali said enforcement measures from 1 April 2026 would extend liability to both petrol station operators and foreign vehicle owners or drivers involved in violations.

Authorities have also warned that strict action would be taken against parties involved in fuel subsidy leakages and smuggling activities.

Previous case resulted in fine

The latest incident follows previous enforcement action involving a similar allegation.

In an earlier case, a man was fined RM9,000 (US$2,217) after a viral video allegedly showed him pumping subsidised RON95 petrol into a Singapore-registered vehicle in Johor.

Court proceedings indicated he was charged under Section 108(3)(e) of Malaysia's Road Transport Act 1987 for allegedly displaying an altered or tampered vehicle registration number.
