CHIBA, JAPAN: A United Airlines flight travelling from Shanghai to San Francisco was forced to make an unscheduled landing in Japan on 24 June after a Chinese passenger allegedly caused a major disturbance onboard.
Flight UA858, operated by a Boeing 777-300 carrying 285 passengers and 16 crew members, departed Shanghai Pudong Airport at 12:43 pm before diverting to Tokyo Narita Airport roughly two hours into the journey.
According to witnesses, the woman had already displayed unusual behaviour at the boarding gate in Shanghai, reportedly talking to herself, shouting abuse in both Chinese and English, and claiming she was being persecuted.
Alleged confrontation with crew
Passengers said the woman's conduct escalated after take-off. She allegedly threw documents from the seat pocket into the air, shouted profanities, scattered food and spat inside the cabin. Some accounts also claimed she threw utensils at cabin crew during the disruption.
One witness said: “She tossed all the documents in her seat pockets in the air, shouted cuss words periodically, and also periodically started hitting herself.”
Another passenger alleged that the woman accused crew members of trying to “oppress” her.
During one interaction, a purser who attempted to gain her attention by tapping her shoulder was reportedly met with an elbow in what was described as a startled reaction.
As the disturbance continued during meal service, air marshals were said to have issued warnings before the captain decided to divert the aircraft in the interest of safety.
Police escort passenger from aircraft
The aircraft landed safely at Tokyo Narita Airport at 4:37 pm local time, where officers from Japan’s Chiba Prefectural Police boarded the plane and escorted the Chinese-speaking passenger off.
Some passengers expressed mixed views about the incident. One traveller commented: “Personally, I felt it was a mix of misunderstanding, overreaction, and mismanagement from both sides.”
Following the unscheduled stop, passengers reported that a maintenance issue was also identified before departure resumed. The aircraft left Tokyo at around 6:15 pm and continued to San Francisco, arriving approximately one hour and 40 minutes behind schedule.
