Two people were taken to Singapore General Hospital on Monday after an ammonia leak was detected at an ice supplier's facility in Jurong, prompting the evacuation of three buildings along Fishery Port Road.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it received a call for assistance at about 11.45am at 11 Fishery Port Road, the premises of Jurong Marine Cold Storage.

Upon arrival, SCDF personnel detected ammonia within the compound and immediately ordered an evacuation of the building. As a precautionary measure, neighbouring premises at 9 Fishery Port Road and 15 Fishery Port Road were also evacuated.

SCDF's HazMat specialists traced the source of the leak to a pipe inside a room within the facility. The supply valve to the affected pipe was subsequently shut off.

"Latest readings from HazMat detectors confirmed that the concentration of ammonia vapour in the premises has decreased," SCDF said in a statement.

Two individuals from the affected premises were assessed by SCDF paramedics at the scene before being conveyed to Singapore General Hospital for treatment following exposure to the ammonia vapour. Their conditions were not disclosed.

SCDF cautioned members of the public to stay away from the location while operations were ongoing.

Ammonia is commonly used in industrial refrigeration systems, including those found in cold storage facilities. At elevated concentrations, it can cause respiratory irritation and, in severe cases, chemical burns to the airways and skin.
